Great Grandmother's Surname
« on: Friday 27 July 12 12:55 BST (UK) »
Hi all!! Can you help me please!!! I want to know my great grandmother's maiden surname, her first name was Elizabeth. (Death around 1962, December in St. David's Hospital in Carmarthen) I believed she married twice. First husband, is said to be William Evans, Blaennant Trelech second husband Jonny Thomas coal miner from Tumble. She had two sons John the eldest who was my grandfather and David, both Davies. I have no idea about her birth date.

Hi welcome to Rootschat.

Do you have the date your grandfather was born? If it was after 1911 the mother's name will be on Freebmd.  http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

There are 2 deaths registered - any idea which might be her?

Deaths Dec 1962
THOMAS    Elizabeth    61    Carmarthen    8a   256
THOMAS    Elizabeth    81    Carmarthen    8a   242

Thanks for the reply. It is Elizabeth Thomas, 81 year old. June 9th 1909 would be my Grandfather's date of birth.

Hi - I'm slightly confused. You say that your grandfather was John Davies and his brother was David Davies, yet your great grandmother married twice once to an Evans and the second time to a Thomas. So where does the Davies fit in, or were they born before her marriages, in which case her maiden name would be Davies.?

 Hi! Thanks for your help.
I'm confused myself regarding the Davies however as far as I know both  John born 1909 and David were born out of wedlock.  As I only have a vague memory of my great grandmother she died when I was 8/9 her maiden surname is still a mystery.

If both your grandfather and great uncle were born before she married, they may have been registered in her maiden name  which would therefore be Davies. Unfortunately, there are quite a number of William Evans/Elizabeth Davies marriages, can you narrow down the year it might have been?

I think you need to concentrate on your grandfather and work back from there. You need to get his birth certificate that will give his mother's name. If you already know where he was born you may be able to find him in the 1911 census. We are not allowed to do look ups for that due to copyright, but these tips might help.   http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,492718.0.html

Unfortunately you are working with names that are very common in Wales.

Well spotted Brevitas as they are starting to duplicate.   ;D ;D  It does seem as if Great Grandmother's name was Davies.  ;)
