Missing Jeffersons.
« on: Sunday 29 July 12 08:20 BST (UK) »
Hi,

How can families or members of families apparently just disappear of the face of the earth - it's sooo frustrating?.

I am trying to find members of my Jefferson family. The parents were Thomas Jefferson who was born 22/09/1841 in Tyne & Wear & Hannah L Evans who was born in 1850 in Cardiganshire. They married in Northumberland in 1872 & moved to the Islington area of London between 1871-1881.

I have traced the family with no problems up to & including the 1901 census.

I think Thomas may have died Q1 1902 in the Wandsworth area - I will be ordering the D/C to confirm this at the end of the month. In 1911 I think Hannah is widowed, living at 29,Danvers St in Chelsea but I have been unable to trace her DOD.

I have also traced their first two sons,George Sayers Jefferson (born 1873) & Thomas (born 1878) in 1911 & their DODs. However their remaining children;Martha born 1881,Margaret born 1883,Ethel born 1886,David William born 1888 & Edward Hemmings Jefferson born 1891 have all disappeared off the radar. I can trace no marriages,no emigration records & no DODs (other than Edward who I think may have died in 1959 in Berkshire).

Can anyone help?

Regards

Coreen

Hi Coreen

that death of Edward H Jefferson does look like your man.  His will is on the probate index

Edward Hemmings Jefferson of 12 Ray Lodge Mews Ray Park Avenue, Maidenhead, Berkshire died 27 September 1959 at King Edward VII Hospital. Probate London 11 January to Margaret Agatha Jefferson, Widow
Effects £698 15s 3d.

Edward and Margaret Agatha appear on some passengers lists between the UK and USA so they could well have gone to the US for a while

Getting his will might give up some of the siblings, especially if the sisters married

(1) On board the Queen Elizabeth from New York to Southampton arriving 4 June 1957

Edward H Jefferson, born 3 April 1891
Margaret A Jefferson, born 13 June 1894

address is Little Field, Cox Green, Maidenhead.  He is a "Director" by trade and their intended residence is the UK

(2) On board the Queen Mary from New York to Southampton arriving 9 June 1959

all the other information is the same as 1957

(3) Margaret Agatha on board the Queen Elizabeth from New York to Southampton arriving 2 May 1960

Margaret Agatha seems to die in 1977 in Windsor, Berkshire

Try the Margaret Jefferson living in Horstead Keynes, Sussex as a parlour maid in 1911 - it gives her birth place as Highbury but Highbury is part of Islington

Hi Ruth & Cath,

Have just googled Edward Hemmings Jefferson & got quite a lot of info on son Edward Graham Jefferson - don't know why I didn't do that before.

Thanks for all the info - it's been very helpful. I've checked the FreeBMD website & found that Edward & Margaret married Dec 1914 in Newcastle Upon Tyne - which was the area Edward's father originated from. Edward's sons seem to have been registered in the Wandsworth area of London so it looks as though he was only in Newcastle for the wedding.  Maybe his siblings returned to the area as well??

Again - really appreciate you help.

Regards

Coreen

Hello Coreen
My father's cousin married a son of Edward Hemmings Jefferson, I can provide you with more information, only this is the first time I have used RootsChat messaging, so I am not sure how it all works. Kind Regards, Jan
