What happened to Jane Bark ?
« on: Sunday 29 July 12 19:24 BST (UK) »

Jane was born  3rd August 1869 Kirkcolm Wigtownshire she was the daughter of Abram Bark and Janet Ross.

On 27th April 1888 she married William Lindsay .

William died aged about 32 on 26th February 1896

Did Jane remarry where and when did she die? I cannot find either on SP

Thanks,

suzilad.

I have eventually found William on 1891 census in Stoneykirk under Linsey Jane is not with him.

On his death cert. she is stated to be his wife -- his brother John registered his death.

William is buried in Stoneykirk cemetery.

Can anyone find her on 1891 and 1901 census please.

Struggling to find anything for you, suzilad  :-\ Can't see anything obvious for her under Lindsay for 1891. There are some entries in England for example for a Scottish born Jane, but they all show as single from what I can see.

She is a complete mystery Monica couldn't find her at NRH or on SP Can't even find a 2nd marriage
or any children with William . Think this rain is affecting my thinking :)

William is buried with his parents and a sister at Stoneykirk.

I am hoping  Jane might be buried with her parents -- either at Leswalt where he died
or Kirkmaiden where her mother died .

I believe I have solved this one.
Jane Bark or McMeikan died in the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh 18th Feb 1925, usual abode Stenhouse Mills, Golgie, Edinburgh. Death record says she was 54.

What seems to have happened is this: she went to Ireland (co Down) around 1891/2 with John McMeikan, (variously 'byreman, labourer or dairyman')  They lived there until at least 1895 and had three children.  The 1891 Ireland census was pulped so no records other than the children's' births.  Next child born in Linwood, Paisley 1898.  In 1901 the couple were in New Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire, fifth child  (named Richard Bark after his grandfather) born there the following year.  In 1911, they were at Rink, Caddenfoot near Galashiels.  In 1915 John and Jane finally married by declaration in Edinburgh (presenting as bachelor and spinster) while her husband was a general labourer and private in the Cameron Highlanders. They were living at 10 Caledonian Road. In 1921 census at Westfield Cottages, Clackmannan with a 4 year-old granddaughter.  I think (but needs checking) John McMeikan died in 1944.

In summary: ran away to Ireland with another man and stayed there until after her husband died!

Welcome to RootsChat, and what a wonderful opening post :)
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

  Hi .
Apologies I have just seen email regarding this post.
I had forgotten all about posting this.
I thought as Portpatrick is just a short distance across the sea from Northern Ireland that they may have gone there . A friend found them on the census  which gave me so much information  . I was back at NRH in Edinburgh and found them on census their marriage Jane's death in 1925 and John's in 1944. Richard married in Dumbarton and emigrated to Australia another friend found that .
Jane and John also had another child Alexander who was 9 months old when he passed away in 1907 at that time they were living in Drum Street Gilmerton which is on the south side of Edinburgh .I have no information on the rest of their children .
What is yur connection to them
