Brickwall Sweeney/McGovern and Kilkenny/Charles
« on: Monday 30 July 12 13:46 BST (UK) »
I am a large brick wall that I have not been able to penetrate for many years..  Maybe someone know info on these folks who married in low to mid 1800's in Ireland.  I know about their children but their records do not tell anymore than that.

THey are:Bernard Sweeney/Mary Mcgovern and Anne Charles/Anthony KIlkenny
Sweeney, Kilkenny, Greenan, Charles

Hi there,

We would need a bit more information on roughly how this list of names are connected and a nearer time frame to what you are looking for !

Lets see what I can provide:
Anthony Kilkenny born around 1826 in Tooma or near that area.
Anne Charles was born around 1831 and stories go she came from Drumreilly
They had 8 children ranging from birth 1861-1877

Anthony Kilkenny lived with his wife Ann Charles at Tooma, parish of Cloone (RC parish of Aughavas).  There is no record of their marriage in that RC parish but these are often absent from the records; either the record was omitted or the couple married in another parish.  There were several Kilkennys in Tooma and I see no reason why that townland could not have been his home/place of birth. (this paragraph supplied by JIm Irvine.

Bernard Sweeney was born around 1830 in Ballinamore area, I think.
Mary McGovern was born around 1826 in Tullyosacar (sp)
Sweeney, Kilkenny, Greenan, Charles

Hi there,

Just googling and I can see that you have posed this question on numerous different sites.

I admire your determination but I think your brick wall may be remaining intact for a while yet unless something new comes to light !

Good Luck

You might want to check out the dates available for the various parishes involved - you could be looking for records that dont exist. e.g. RC baptism & marriage records for Aughavas go back to 1845, those for Drumreilly only go back to 1870 etc, baptisms for Oughteragh parish which include the townland of Tullyoscar go back to  1869.

I do have Drumreilly C of I g/yard photographed but nothing for your names.. I see there are a lot of RC graves here and as Shane has mentioned records for Drumreilly RC only go back to 1870 but I'm just wondering IF the Charles family might be buried here and if so could the records be there? I see stones going back into 1700's.

Now I don't was to send you on a wild goose chase but it MIGHT be worth keeping in mind as a possible for burials!!
