Ordering a Birth Certificate- completed
« on: Tuesday 24 May 05 20:05 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

How do I go about trying to obtain a birth certificate for someone in the year 1846 in Ireland?  Is it possible?

Thanks
Karen

Hi Karen, Too early I'm afraid. Certs are obtainable from the 1860's onwards.Regards,Kevin.

Hi,

IF you know where and roughly when they were born (which  parish) and what religion, you can try the parish records

Thanks for the info Kate.  I do have a rough idea, so I will send off a letter and see what happens.

Hi,

Check first if the PRs are on film at your local famly history centre. Could save time. See this link. Otherwise they may be at the National Library in Dublin or perhaps closed to public viewing by the bishop depending on the diocese.

Hi Kate,

Thanks for that link.  I just checked it out and the information for marriages seems to be available at the National Library in Dublin.  I wish I could hop on a plane tommorrow, but that's not likely to happen.  The Roscommon heritage society has other records.  They will do a search for 25 Euro.

Both resources did not have births early enough, but looking up the marriage would be handy.
