National Burial Index Look up - Glamorgan - ROSSER
« on: Tuesday 24 May 05 20:26 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have been told that Martha ROSSER was buried in Cowbridge, Glamorgan 16 Feb 1765.  Is she listed in the NBI?  Her husband, William ROSSER, was a survivor.  Is he listed in the NBI?  I am guessing he would have been born about 1710-1720.

Thank you,

Susan41

Hi Susan,
There was only one Martha Rosser on the NBI for that period buried in Glamorgan.

17 Feb 1765 Martha Rosser (no age given) Holy Trinity Llandow.

There were 35 William Rosser's buried in Glamorgan between 1538-1760 and 55 between 1761-1825.  None were buried at Llandow or Cowbridge.

Would he have been buried in a different place to his wife?
If so do you have any places you could suggest so I can see if he is there.

Otherwise, he might have been buried with his wife at Llandow and it just hasn't been recorded on the NBI for some reason.

Thank you so very much Su,

As I have nothing to go on regarding my William ROSSER, when you have the time would you consider telling me about a couple of William ROSSERs over the age of 45 (if age is given) who were buried in Glamorgan between 1765 and 1770?

Martha Rosser nee Hancorne is in my tree also. I am presuming that they wee buried apart as he may have had something to do with her death.

↑ The following is an extract from the contemporary diary of William Thomas -

"16 February 1765 - Was buried in Cowbridge, two months before her time with her two children, being twins, in her womb, and she was delivered by a surgeon, of about 45 years of age, a first cousin of Madam Jones of Fonmon, for she was either daughter or grandaughter of the late Revd. Mr. Thomas Hancorne, Rector of St. Donats, deceased. She was wife to William Rosser, late of Burthin, Shopkeeper, now Keeper of Cowbridge's House of Correction. She dy'd from his abuseing her as the report goes, and he was before Mr. Bruce, a Justice of the Peace, in her case, but was cleared by the Surgeon etc."
