Daniel Crerand
« on: Wednesday 01 August 12 10:07 BST (UK) »
I am researching Daniel Crerand born 1835 who left Donegal c 1855 and went to USA. He married Marian Connelly or Conley in 1859 in York County PA.  Can't find any records or locations in Ireland!!!!   Griffiths Valuation suggests there may be family in Aughanunshin parish in 1850s in barony of Kilmacrenan. Tithe Applotments indicate families in Ellistron in 1820s.
Can anyone help? Thanks

Hi there,

Do you have anything to state that he WAS from Donegal or is this just where you have found the family name ?

Do you have his marriage cert to get his father's name ?

Tara

Hi,

Thanks Tara,

Marriage Certificate only says "Ireland" and no parents!!

Family say he was from Donegal but no proof.  So he may be from elsewhere. Given the Scottish name, I feel it will be an Ulster county.

He was RC.

Any ideas??

Thanks!!

Hi there,

You are running up against a few different problems.

Civil registration only began in 1864 so as you are looking for details from 30 years before this you need to be looking for church records.

To do this you need a definite county, a rough townland AND a father's name - none of which you have.

Even if you had some of these, the records for that church may not have gone back to the 1830's.

Sorry for all the bad news, but with such a rare name in Ireland someone else researching this name will hopefully see this.

Good Luck

Tara

 Hello Michael,

Griffith Valuation link below might suggest there are a minimum of three households all within the general area of Letterkenny, Donegal for the whole of the survey. If the LDS microfiche do not turn up any results the estate papers of the landlords william boyd, william wray or viscount southwell may throw a little more light on your search. One of the entries records the landlord as John Crerand.

Ulsterancestry.com and the PRONI PAGE on this forum under the Antrim section offers links to wills and estates.

Hi Michael,

Not sure if you've checked this site out ,http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/
Under Researchers Surnames A-K, a fellow researcher Rachel may have a clearer picture of what records are still available for your Crerand family.

Hi Michael,
I have been researching the Crerand family and have also hit the same brick wall with Daniel.  Daniel is my husbands gggrandfather.  I have all the research I could find on him and his descendants in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.  I tried sending an email to Rachel that the poster Lisacul Rosie suggested but the link to the email does not work.  Anyway, would love to help or find out anything else you may know.
Thanks,
KCrerand

Do you know what religion your Crerands would have been?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

The Crerand family that I am talking about were Catholic in the USA so I assume they were in Ireland.
