Rothersthorpe Parish Records - MANNING
« on: Saturday 04 August 12 11:00 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the parents of John Manning born 1781 Rothersthorpe, Northamptonshire.

He married Ann Dunkley (b 1783 Kislingbury) on 29 Oct 1805.

The Dunkley family came from Great Brington and there is a Manning family in Great Brington in the middle and early part of the 18th Century but I can't seem to find the connection (if, indeed, there is one)

I have visited the County Records office on a number of occasions to no avail (but this may mean I'm just not looking in the right place!)

If anybody can help or point me in the right direction it would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Simon

From the FreeREG website (www.freereg.org.uk):

15 APR 1781 - Brington (St. Mary the Virgin) - John MANNING, s. Thomas and Elizabeth, mason

Thomas and Elizabeth's marriage is also in the Brington PRs, but I can't seem to see the baptism of any siblings (perhaps they moved to Rothersthorpe and that's why John thought he was born there?).

Thanks very much Pennie, I think you may have found the missing link!

Could you let me know the date of Thomas & Elizabeths marriage please?

I think Bernard Dunkley was the parish clerk at that time - also he is my relation

Thanks for the info.

I still have to convince myself that this is the right person as other family trees have him married to a Mary Gammage (Norton census of 1861 has a John Manning, widow, Ag Lab. born abt 1782 living with a son William and his family)

My John definitely married Ann Dunkley (hence the Dunkley connection) on 29 Oct 1805 St Lukes, Kislingbury.

I noticed that in FreeReg there were in fact 2 John Mannings born in Brington in that period.

The second was christened on 22 Sep 1783, son of Thomas (Labourer) & Anna.

I would like to prove, to a much greater degree, that I have the correct one before I commit him to my tree.

Any thoughts on how I could achive this would be greatly received (I think I will have to visit the Records office in the coming weeks!)

Many thanks for all your help and advice

I see from the census that your Mannings were farmers.
Neither of the Brington Baptisms for John seem likely as one of the father's was a labourer, the other a mason.
And he does say that he was born in Rothersthorpe.

I agree, and there in lies my problem. I'm sure he is connected to the Brington Mannings (especially since he married into another well know Brington family - Dunkley)

Where to now?

The only things I can think of are:

a. He was born (and christened) out of wedlock - are there any such baptisms in Rothersthorpe with the christian name John? (this is assuming he adopted the name Manning after his parents were married - a bit far fetched but not unknown).

b. He really didn't know where he was born and guessed Rothersthorpe!

I think I'll have to make one last visit to the archives and see if there are any other ways I can find out - wills etc

Any other tips would be gratefully received.
