Marris Crests/Coat of Arms
« on: Sunday 05 August 12 20:14 BST (UK) »
Hi, Does anyone have any information about the Marris Crest or Coat of Arms?
Family history goes back to William 1 (1066).
Thanks for any help.

There is no such thing as a family crest or coat-of-arms! ;D

Arms are granted to an individual, and his direct-line descendants may use the arms.

Unless you can prove direct descent from the person who was awarded the arms, then they aren't yours.

There is no-one of that name in my Armorial Families (1902).

To continue to rain on your parade, may I recommend the book My Ancestors Came With The Conqueror, Anthony J Camp, Society of Genealogists 1990, ISBN 0946789029? I was encouraged to read this by a genealogy of one of my ancestors published in some editions of Burke's Landed Gentry, where the descent was claimed into the 10th century?

Burke's General Armory lists one Marris, in Barton, county York, bearing:

Gules a saltire engrailed argent

with the crest, A castle proper.

Of course, whether this Marris is related to the family you are asking about is a matter for genealogical research.
