Hi Poppy

After reading what vabbott had to say about Walton church being damaged, i've had another look through the PRs for St Michaels, Kirby le Soken. Do you think that there could be a variable to their surname??

Sept 13 1811, Susan daughter of William & Elizabeth Ekers

Also found another child of William & Elizabeth

William Ekers 1 May 1808

Marriage
27 Feb 1807 William Ekers & Elizabeth Smith, both single and of the parish of Kirby, married by banns.

Thank you Ronnie for some very useful information. :)

And thank you very much Kevin. I have a feeling you have found Susan and her family! :)

I have just been looking at census indexes for Susan's parents William and Elizabeth and her siblings under various spellings but not having a lot of luck. If anyone comes across them in a census, their deaths, or marriages for Susan's siblings it would be a great help.

Not Susan siblings but I have some decending information from Susans daughter Annie Fairbrother that married a Frederick William Sparke in New Zealand. Annie Sparke (nee Fairbrother) even named a daughter Amelia after her aunt by the looks of it. (Source New Zealand Births and deaths).  At the moment I am trying to find out a bit about their lives/location and I believe somewhere out there there is a Sparke/Heaps book for Southland New Zealand.

Hello whiteout7

I am very pleased to hear from you. Thank you for the information.  :)

Ann Fairbrother, the youngest daughter of Martin and Susan, gave birth to an illegitimate daughter, Eliza Fairbrother, in 1872. In the 1881 census the child, recorded as Elizabeth, was a boarder with Ann's sister, Emily Lee, at Walton. Also living with them was Susan Fairbother, Emily's mother.

In October 1874 Ann Fairbrother married Frederick Spark at Walton.

In 1875 Ann and Frederick Spark had daughter Ettie Maude registered in the Tendring district. This district covers the parish of Walton.

And those were the only references I had for Ann and Frederick Spark, or Sparke, until your post came through.

Do you know when they went to New Zealand? You mentioned a child Amelia. Did they have other children born in New Zealand?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I have just found a record online that has Frederick and Ann Sparke, and Ellie (Ettie) aged three months, leaving London on the 14th July 1875 heading for Bluff.

So it looks as if Ann's other child Eliza, then aged three, was left behind in Essex. I guess she, perhaps, wasn't fathered by Frederick Sparke.

I am not sure, at present, who the 1807 William Ekers burial relates to.

Three children are now known for parents William and Elizabeth Akers:
William baptised 1st May 1808 at Kirby
Susan baptised 13th September 1812 at Kirby
Martha baptised 11th October 1815 at Walton

Son William got involved in what became known as the Kirby Riots, in 1830, and was transported to Tazmania for seven years for breaking a threshing machine at Walton.
Daughter Susan gave birth to a son Joseph Akers, baptised in 1831. She went on to marry Martin Fairbrother and they had eleven children at Walton.
Daughter Martha gave birth to a daughter Louisa Barker Akers, baptised in 1831. Martha married Luke Barker. They moved to Suffolk and had a large family.

Thank you Nannyj.  :)

I hadn't realised Susan's mother had died so young. She was Elizabeth Smith, before her marriage, and a baptism of an Elizabeth in Kirby records in 1789 to a Robert and Sarah Smith ties in nicely.

It would make William 19 years her senior. Not impossible I know. Looks like she was born 1789and he 1770? Shame he didn’t last another year for the census!
