It wasn't till about 1875 that babies had to be registered, up until then most relied on baptisms, I suppose if you didn't want your child baptised he was only on the census, bit hit and miss and very frustrating to us who are hunting them down.

Yes very - if only they had known the frustration they were going to cause by not registering their children's births!

A John Oliver Hewitt married my grandmother, Mary Ann Baxter (nee Welldon) in 1935.
