Unfortunately you require a little more detail to start a search for someone born before the start of civil birth records (1864). Ideally you require the denomination of this family and also the name of the parish, town or townland where this Golding family lived, so you can check what records are available.

see : Introduction to Irish Records
My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?

I would start with census searches for John is you haven't already done that, particularly the later returns.

Where was Mary born ?

If she was born in England or Wales then follow up on the marriage of John and Mary, maybe in Lancashire. A civil cert will show father's names and occupations which could help your search for a baptism for your John.

Thanks Shane, that's really helpful.  Mary was born in Llanllwchaiarn Montgomery (Wales). She is registered as 26 on the 1861 censusand her husband John Golding as 40 - he was a 'porter'

I guessed an Evans might have been Welsh somewhere along the line....

I'll have a look for a possible marriage on FreeBMD

I'm not finding John and Mary on the 1861 census in Lancashire at the moment  - can you check years of birth for John - your first post said c1835, the most recent (age 40) would give c1821..

Hi,
OOps, you are right. Just checked other source which shows John's dates as 1820 -1883
Mary Evans 1833-1890
I have John and Mary on the 1861 census residing in liverpool with one son Michael (1)
They appear again on 1871 (62 Oxton Rd Birkenhead)
1881 (24 Warwick St Birkenhead)
By 1881 they have 6 children mentioned on census and one grandchild.
 :)
Thanks for your help
