necaco llanberis
« on: Thursday 16 August 12 22:06 BST (UK) »
In the early 1940's my father worked at Necaco, Llanberis. Had a photo given to me of a group in front of Caernarvon Castle. the board reads WELLINGTON BOMB BEAM SECTION.  Could this be a photo of a group of workers from Necaco?
Thank you

Necaco was an aircraft factory so I think that this photo is of a works outing, they are all dressed up.

Reg Chambers Jones has produced an informative and well researched book called 'Gwynedd and Anglesey. The War Years. 1939-1945'
Chapter 8 deals with industry and has about 12 pages devoted to 'NECACO' with quite a few photos of workers etc but not the one you describe.
Re the Llanberis site he says
' The first jigs to be installed at Llanberis were those for producing wings in the Boulton & Paul Defiant night fighter. When it was fully operational, the factory produced parts for Handley-Page Halifax, Avro Lancaster, Short Stirling and Vickers Wellington bombers...'

There were other sites but they are not shown to be producing the parts you refer.

Here if you fancy buying it

:) This topic has given me the name of the company that my late father worked for during the war.  He had lost his family home and business in Bootle - May blitz -  moved to live with family in Penygroes, worked as a driver for the above company, ferrying aeroplane parts to ..???

I remember his best friend from that time of his life was Will Griffith from Groeslon, and Will's brother (name not known) - I do have a pic somewhere of a group of drivers.

If anyone has any info on these drivers I would love to know!

No photos specific to drivers that I can see in this section.

Local lorries were  used until they got about 14 purpose built lorries*. Crew of two so that maximum eleven hours duty was not exceeded.
Deliveries to Weybridge, s/w London meant leaving 4pm from Llanberis, arriving following 10am. Also delivered to Fairey Aviation at Alston, Cumbria. On return they would bring material from various locations inc Gloucester. At relevant times the men would always find room for baskets of fruit from Evesham. Bought at 1s a basket and sold to eager customers a 1s 6d. a profit of 6d per basket!

* known as Queen Mary, google Queen Mary lorry and there's stuff about them,...large, low loader types

Hi
Hi
Article in Welsh on Wikipedia gives a Welsh translation of the companies name. It would appear that NECACO stands for North East Coast Aircraft COmpany. This company was registered by Huntings before the start of the Second World War; registered office at Milburn House, Newcastle-upon Tyne.
