Rev Thomas Milner
« on: Friday 17 August 12 16:53 BST (UK) »
Rev Thomas Milner was ordained as a Church of England priest in 1893, originally for the Newcastle on Tyne diocese. He moved to London in 1899 as curate of Christ Church, West Green. In 1901, he founded the Church Red Cross Brigade, which became the Church Nursing and Ambulance Brigade around 1911. This was an organisation for girls similar to the St John's Ambulance Brigade. His wife was secretary to the Brigade and they had daughters who were also members. She became blind and eventually Rev Milner returned to the north - there are connections with Scarborough and Northumberland. I am looking for descendants of the Rev and Mrs Thomas Milner.

PS Other reading suggests he may have retired to Manchester.

Self ... Conn, Brownlee, Cameron, Bates.
Wife ... Clegg, Niblock, Dunlop, Rowley.
Other ... Bremner, Lewis, McIlwrath, Cardy.

Do you have any idea of his dates?    Census records will probably show if they did have children.  Have you looked at them?

The 1911 census is currently free to search on Ancestry so why not see if you can find him?  It looks as if he may well have been in the London area.
He appears in my 1951 copy of Crockford's.
Notting Hill 1906 - 19 then to Goole 1922 -25, Whitley Bay 25-28, Alston 1929-33, Croglin 1933-37.  Address given as Croglin, Ashfield Grove, Whitley Bay, Northumberland.

Andrea. Thank you for the Cockford's listing. Very useful. I wonder why there is nothing for 1919 to 1922. I believe his wife became blind at this time. I will see if I can find him on the census. Thanks again.

Checked again and it says " Perm. to Offic. Dio S'wark 1910-22; Dio. Lon.1920-22" Not sure what that means.
There is a similar bit for later too.  "L. to Offic. Dios. Dur. and Newc.T. from 1937"

Permission to officiate. Diocese of Southwark 1910 - 22. Diocese of London 1920 - 22.

This means he was given permission by the Bishops of Southwark and London to officiate at churches in their Dioceses between the dates quoted.

Licence to Officiate Dioceses of Durham and Newcastle upon Tyne from 1937.

Thanks.  Presumably that means he could be a "floating" vicar but was not necessarily attached to a parish.

Thanks Andrea and JenB. Have found the census record for 1911. They were living at 163 Edgware Road and Thomas Milner was organizing secretary for the Church Nursing and Ambulance Brigade. His wife, Florence Nightingale Milner was secretary to the organisation. Daughter - Florence Beatrice Milner. Your dates are a great help, especially as it shows he moved from London in 1922. This is when the CNAB lost its organising secretary and an approach was made to the Church Lads Brigade to take them over. Other dates, 1937, suggests retirement, at which point he was given permission to officiate in other churches.
