Hi there

Dont know if you know the following

Rice Lane, Walton on the Hill, where Henry lived in 1841 census was
where the West Derby Union Workhouse was situated.  So wonder
if Henry had fallen on hard times?  Marys brother John is living with
them.
I noticed that Henry jrn died in 1837.  There was two bad epidemics
in Liverpool that year of Measles and Typhoid.

There are two trees with a Henry Beeston on that say he was born
in Manchester and one says Middlesex.  There is also on the birth records
a Henry Beeston born in Yorkshire 1812.

Saw the Bishops transcripts for the birth of Mary.  Christened on
13th August 1811 at St Georges, Hanover Square, Middlesex in
the parish of Westminster.  Parents are John and Maria.
Looks like Mary was only about 16 when she married

Thats all I can find at the moment  Hope this helps you

Hiya,

jim1 - I'm trying to trace Henry Beeston before 1841, where and when Henry was born, who were his parents? I'm researching with my partner Russell Beeston. He thinks he may have been born in London / Chelsea / Middx due to:

1. Marrying Mary Pasley in haste(?) St Clement Danes, Westminster, Middx on 20 Apr 1832
2. John Henry Beeston, Born Chelsea St Luke, 06 Jul 1832
3. Henry & Mary living in Bond St., Henry is an Exciseman (London docks?) as per St Luke Parish record.
4. The family move to Liverpool somewhere between 1832-34. His occupation is a Landwaiter for HM Customs at L'pool Docks.

Sandymc47 - Thanks for the tip about measles and typhoid. Not sure about Henry being in the workhouse, although Chelsea St Luke is where the poorhouse is, so I'm not ruling out the connection. However, I'd take an educated guess that a landwaiter might not have been so poorly paid or else they'd be open to bribery. Also, the landwaiter role supervised gaugers, a responsible position.

1. Is the Manchester Henry, the chap from Hulme, 1851 census
2. The Henry Beeston born in Anston S. Yorks is still living in S. Yorks on 1841 census. For a period Russell did think it might have been him till he saw the '41 census.
3. Henry was arrested and brought before Liverpool Assizes 17 Aug 1843 and committed to Crown court and sent to Lancaster Gaol. There was a massive Customs House Fraud in 1843 (Hansard on line 8 Aug 1843, and The Times 29 July & 1 Aug 1843 to name but a few). He was acquitted we believe.
4. Not on 1851 census in Liverpool.
5. Dies 20 Aug 1852, aged 39 in Liverpool as per Liverpool Mercury newspaper.
6. Thanks, got a copy of Bish T/script. I'm aware Mary's parents are John & Maria Jackson.

Henry's starting to get on our nerves so any info will be gratefully received.

Regards,
Karen

Not sure I can add much ... there were 3 people involved in the Customs case .. apparently over avoiding tax on some coffee. The other 2 were sent to prison on the second hearing... Henry does not seem to appear at that time.

I think he was described later as a solicitors clerk .. presumably having been fired from his Customs post.

I am trying to find my notes .. I have been looking for his birth / parents for some while.

His wife, Mary,  remarried, in 1854, a Christopher Lowes - son of a Customs Officer.

Christopher died shortly afterwards, in 1855.

Mary lived as the housekeeper to a number of pawnbrokers in Liverpool until her death in 1874.

My theory (for what it's worth) is that Henry Beeston's family were living in the Chelsea area in the 1820-30s, I have seen Beestons recorded in Little Smith St, and Bond Street.

And there was Sarah Beeston baptised 17 Jun 1821 (born 23 June 1820) to Francis Robert Beeston (a cook) and Sarah of Oakley Cottages.

I wonder if  this could have been a sister to Henry?

One would have thought that the Customs Books at Kew, would have had some references to Henry. His occupation is given as a Customs Officer, living in Bond St Chelsea, on John Henry's baptism record.

Presumably he was transferred to Liverpool at some point between 1832 and 1834.

And then the attempt to defraud case in 1844...

Surely there ought to be something in the Customs records?

The other interesting item would have been the envelopes which came up for auction at Spinks

August 2010

660  1843 (10 Oct.) entire letter from London to Henry Beeston at the Customs House in Liverpool then re-addressed to the local Borough Gaol – Beeston had been indicted for “Conspiracy to defraud Customs”; 1864 and 1869 envelopes
from Liverpool to the same addressee in London, each with an attractive grey/blue embossed “CENTRAL POLICE OFFICE/LIVERPOOL” seal on flap; some faults though attractive

One wonders where the letters are now? Who sold them? and what was in them?

I'm searching for information about Francis Robert Beeston you mention below:

And there was Sarah Beeston baptised 17 Jun 1821 (born 23 June 1820) to Francis Robert Beeston (a cook) and Sarah of Oakley Cottages.

This is the most we have. We would be grateful for any more information on him and his wife.

Francis Robert was living in Chelsea at the time of Sarah's baptism.. at St Luke's. His occupation was given as Cook

He later pops up in St Albans .. with his wife ... and later as a widower (his wife died in 1844 in St Albans), with daughter,Sarah and her children  (she married a John Rowen). John, Sarah, and the children went to Australia .. Francis does not seem to have gone with them as he appears to have died in Hertfordshire.

There is a little confusion over his birthplace .. on the last census he gave it as Bakewell, Derbyshire.

There is a feeling that he was a Plain Cook for the Fitzwilliams in Castor...

Can I ask what is your particular interest? I may have more info in my notes..

Regards

Thanks for your reply! Francis Robert Beeston was my G-G-G grandfather. We believe he may have been head chef to George III and/or IV. His daughter Sarah told stories to her grandchildren (my gradmother) of her life living at the palace. Don't know if this is verifiable as records from Windsor Castle were destroyed in a fire. I would love any further info on him and his wife, (also called Sarah) and if he did work for the king.
An Ann Panton was executer of his will. Do you have any info on her? If she was related?
