Nowell Family
« on: Thursday 26 May 05 08:26 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find my grandfather's family who resided (as some of them still do) in Castleford.  I have searched the l901 census and don't seem to be able to find any of his family I wonder if there is anyone out there who might be able to help.  His name was Joseph and he was the eldest child of 16.  His mother's name was Hannah and his father's name was John.  I know that they lived at 34 Grafton Street Glasshoughton but I don't seem to be able to locate that street in the 1901 census.  Does anyone have any ideas.
Janet

Hi Janet,

Any ideas when/where your grandfather was born? Of other children who should be on the Census?

Hi Tanja
The information that I have got is all verbal from rellies in the area.  My great Grandfather was John Nowell and my great grandmother was Hannah or Anna Nowell they lived at 34 Grafton Street Glasshoughton.  From what the family says it seems like they were all from that area I know that some of my rellies are still there living in Castleford.  I was borne there but my parents moved away when I was very small.

Hi again Janet,

the only near matches I could find in Castleford are the following:

RG13/4303
Castleford All Saints
Folio 113 p. 1
56 Cambridge Street

George Newell, head, 68, Doctor of Medicine (plus something between brackets I can't read), own account, birthplace "in Yorks not quite certain"
Mary Jane, wife, 59, b. Wrexham, Denbigh, North Wales
Joseph, son, Married, 24, Labourer in Coal Yard, b. Manchester Lancs

No other family members. I don't think they look like yours.

RG13/4305
Folio 16 p. 24
Castleford All Saints
18 Victoria Place

John Powell, head, 40, Coal Hewer, b. Tunstall Staff
Annie, wife, 35, b. Pontefact Yorks
Mary, dau, 10, b. Castleford
Blanch, dau, 8, b. do.
Joseph, son,6, b. do.
Rachael, dau, 1, b. do.

They don't seem to match either. It would be very useful to have a rough idea of the ages of the people we are searching.

Sorry not to be able to help more

Hi Janet- I've been having a look around but unfortunately my Ancestry account won't let me in! However, on my 1881 discs I've found the following:-

John Nowell - head-age 76- born Swillington,Yorkshire- coal miner (uemployed)
Hannah Nowell-wife-age 70- born Rothwell
Lilly Todd -G. Daur-age 12-born Leeds
Living at 14 Church Street,Rothwell

& living at 37 Mill Street,Whitwood
Joseph Nowell-head-age 41 -born Rothwell-coal miner
Harriett Nowell- wife-age 39-born Hunslet
Wm.Hny Nowell-son- age 16-born Castleford-coal miner

I doubt any of the above are the ones that you are trying to find but they might tie in at some point!!

On freebmd I found the death of Hannah in the Sept quarter of 1886 age 75 (Pontefract vol 9c page 74)
There are a few births fo Josephs all registered in Pontefract reg dist:-
Joseph William Nowell Sept 1889 (vol 9c page 136)
Joseph William Nowell June 1856 (9c 87)
Joseph Nowell March 1850 (vol 22 page 4-7 - number missing from transcription)

Is it your Joseph on Genes Reunited added by you? I see there's also a Herbert Kitchener Nowell born Glasshoughton 1915 added by Terance & John Nowell b. 1948 Castleford added by John - have you tried contacting them?
Sorry I can't be of any further help as Tanja says it's pretty difficult without even a rough idea of the year of birth.
Good luck

Hi my grandparents were called Nowell and lived on Grafton Street number 44.  They were certainly in that house during the war but I am unsure when they moved in. They lived there until their deaths in the seventies. My grandfathers name was Sammuel his wife was Annie, they had a daughter named Sylivia. I think one of his brothers was called Granville and he had a sister called Gladys who had a son called Granville also. I don't know any of his other brothers/sisters.   I wonder if this could be the family you are looking for?  If you are on FB there is a group called Real Remembering Airedale Castleford and Glasshoughton. Some of the oldies in there used to live in Grafton Street and neighbouring streets. They may know more.  Feel free to get in touch if you think this is the family you are looking for.

Welcome to rootschat Caz.  :)

Janet hasn't visited rootschat since 2005 I'm afraid. If she still has the same email address she should get notifications of replies to this thread (if she has set up her account to receive them).

Might Nowell be spelt Knowle in some records?

That seems quite likely.  :) It is a shame that the OP is no longer active on rootschat. With more records online since she posted this query there might be some more to be found ....
