Thanks

Hi Adi1962

A Coat of Arms belongs to one person only, any children from the person all have a different Coat of Arms.

Saying that, the surname 'Godden' appears in "Fairbairns Crests of the Families of Great Brittain and Ireland"

GODDEN, Kent, on a Garb, in fess, a bird, close, in beak a wheat-ear, all or.

The above is the crest which would have been on the top of the helmut, but something similar would have appeared on the shield.

Thank you both.

I have fired off any enquiry to the college.

You live and learn, wonder how many peolple have the same misconception regarding coats of Arms. With a bit of luck might end up with a very important link in my tree if it turns out to be genuine.

Just for information

The Collage of Arms quoted £250 to check out the image I have with no guarantees of a result.

That seems a bit steep.

I had a surname meaning printed off of a database at Lands End, before I started researching around 7 years ago.

My maiden name is Geden and I was so pleased to finally get something with it on.

I paid about £10.

But since doing my research have realised most of what is written is rubbish.

They just seem to collate a few parish records and concluded from memory the name originated from Suffolk.

I haven't found any link with Suffolk, mostly goes back to Banbury and Warwickshire.

So you do have to be very careful.
