I agree with your approach to research, Ambly. I covered all my own surname research doing similar, then Y-DNA testing various branch members to get 100% proof.
Elizabeth jr was listed in the 1851 Census as born Haddington. I was given to believe that Elizabeth sr was born there, but I think it's safer to just say she was born in Scotland &, as you suggest, look at other research options.
Any help gratefully accepted!
