Where is this place please?
« on: Sunday 02 September 12 17:07 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know where Fair Lodge, near Llandilo was please? The National archives gives it like this;

Diocese: St David's
Parish: Llandeilo Fawr
Township: Fair Lodge
County: Carmarthenshire

and the Cambrian index says "near Llandilo"

but I can't find it mentioned anywhere else or find out where it was.

Any ideas please?

Thank you,

B.

There are a few lodges around the mansion in Golden Grove and also the national botanical garden which is built on the land of Middleton Hall near Llanarthne. I hope this will be of some help. :-\

Thanks, but it's not actually a lodge as in one house, but the name of an area, that's why I can't understand where it is. My family are from Golden Grove, but no-one seems to have heard of this so it must have changed it's name long ago, I think.  ???

It is a lodge/farm as township relates to a country dwelling. Checked it out with national Archives when researching a will. Hope that helps.

The "Llanelly Railway and Dock" planning application was published several times in the London Gazette and mentions a "Fair Lodge, Llandilo Fawr". It's just a pity the plans that accompanied the application weren't published!!
(use search key "caepontledis" rather than "fair lodge" to reduce "hits")

Slater's Directory of Glos, Herefs ..... 1859 mentions a "Rev Morgan Morgan, Fair Lodge, Llandilofawr".

Couldn't see it on the OS 1891 map- but have only checked grid ref 033/SE.

Re the '51 Census, on the next census page after Fair Lodge is "Lovelodge Mill".

"Old Maps"  http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html

coordinates are  262763   221487    and when loaded, choose "1884-1887 Map" of Carmarthenshire. Wonder if "Fair Lodge" disappeared under the railway development?
