Old Bible, an interesting exercise.
« on: Monday 03 September 12 17:17 BST (UK) »
A couple of years ago, I bought a box containing old books, maps and an old bible. The maps were dated between 1890 and 1910. The bible had two names Harold S Pogson in one corner. And the name Hannah Stansfield, and address, Todmorden, Lancashire.1858 across the first page.
I decided to delve.
In the 1901 census there is one Harold Pogson bc 1867 in Walsden, Lancashire, living in Newton, Hyde, Cheshire.
Also at the same address are his mother Hannah Pogson and sister Lillian Pogson.
So, back to the 1891 census. We have Wm. P. Pogson, Head, Hannah Pogson, wife, Harold Pogson son and Lillian Pogson Daughter.
Now a search for a marriage.

A William Pogson married a Hannah Stansfield in 1860 in Todmorden Lancashire.
His full name is William Philip Sutton Pogson, born in Horncastle Lincs. C1831
Hannah Stansfield bc 1829 Todmorden,Lancs.
The 1881 census the family† are at 68 Tilbury Terrace, Newton, Hyde, Cheshire.
William is described as Draper, Primitive Methodist Local Preacher
In 1871 they are in Todmorden Lancs.
In 1861 they are in Ardwick, Manchester

Hannah Stansfield
1841 census
Walsden, Todmorden,Lancs
Looks like her family, parents James and Betty and six siblings
Hannah is aged 12

Also in the 1851 census

FF to the 1911 census
78 Lodge Lane, Newton, Hyde
Harold S Pogson b abt 1867 and
Lavinia Pogson wife bc 1871 Hyde, Cheshire
Lillian Pogson sister b Walsden,Lancs.
Harold is described as Engineer and Secretary to a Limited Company.
A marriage for Harold Stanley Pogson and Lavinia Booth, in Stockport ,Cheshire 1908
A death for Harold S Pogson in 1938 Manchester.
Lavinia Booth
1881 census
Living at
6 George Street, Haughton, Lancs
Parents John and Lavinia and 4 siblings

Lodge Lane houses in Newton still stand. No current refs for Tilbury Terrace

I canít find any children for Harold and Lavinia they were both around 40 when they married

The strange/small world thing is, I bought the box of books and maps in Milton Keynes.at a car boot sale for £2. The addresses in Newton, Hyde, Cheshire are 2 miles from where I used to live, up until I migrated south in 1980. There a couple of my tree living in the same area in the 19th century.

More delving..........................

I have 'posted' on local community sites and with the local FHS. Looking for relatives of both.
A lot of Stansfields in that area [Gracie Fields being one] Pogsons seems to be a local name as well.

Nothing yet, but you know how it is with family history, like buses, nothing, then three come at once.
