perry's in wiltshire & perry green?
« on: Thursday 06 September 12 17:52 BST (UK) »
hi i was searching on ancestry for annie perry my great grandma today, and i clicked on the memories and histories tab for a change and it popped up war cemetery info but with her name listed as annie perry wringan.

now i found a reference to possibly her dad edmund wringan in sussex lunatic asylum on a census, he as a cowman, and she as his daughter and with grandson. when i did surname searches for wringan i couldn't find any, not even him lol.  i'm going to go to the records office when i have more sussex stuff and see what they have on the asylum info.

just wondering why it plucked her potential maiden name out when i searched for her. my person profile for her says annie perry, nothing about wringan.  there was nothing in the war cemeteries about annie perry wringan either.  any ideas?

what is the FindMyPast you're quoting? why would it have a different surname to the census?

i have quite done quite a lot on perry's one generation up and down from jacob and yes that would appear to be the marriage, which i've recently ordered a certificate for although i guessed it would have confirmed wringan.

there is a nice write up for jacob on the dnw medal auction site for his medals and a large part of his continuous service in the royal navy. i was going to order a copy of his service record but i was told that it would likely constitute single page registers rather like the census return until his continuous service, and i think most of that appears on the dnw site. well i was told it would likely be a single sheet of his record anyway.  would have been nice to get a photo of his medals though.

even though he was away at sea they still managed 9 kids and as i found today they are buried together in portsmouth.  as for the asylum entry it didn't say they were ill, so i presumed edmund wringan worked on the farm stock hence the cowman, and she may or may not have been his daughter with a young child to look after while jacob was at sea.  I have also found that jacob's brother in law was the brewer at the asylum so annie had her sister in law around also (martha wickham nee perry).

as was probably common with farm workers they all seemed to marry into the other local families, so a search of the early census records makes it quite easy to find spouses and family at nearby addresses when they move.

that bonieface sounds interesting, i'll check the asylum records in the near future. thanks

Hi FindMyPast is Find my Past, if you look at the original of the census, not the transcription, it could? be read as both Wringan or Bonifac (no e) in 1871 hard to read but looks like both born in Streat or Street, Sussex

This is 1861 Census

William Riddle 71 occ Baliff 150 Acres employing 4 men & 1 boy b St Johns Lewes Sussex
Edmund Bonniface 42 occ Ag Lab b Streat
Sarah Bonniface 38 occ Dairymaid b St Johns
Mary Bonniface 13 b Ditchling
ANN Bonniface 9 b Streat
Residing at Marchants Farm, Street Place, Street

Edmund/Annie and Henry C are not inmates, all the inmates are shown by their initials ie A C E etc

Mary Boniface marries a John West in March qtr 1876 Brighton 2b 273
