Do the newspaper accounts provide any additional personal information that might help me determine the origins of John Doidge?

No sorry no more about him other than that he was an unemployed labourer lodging nearby. The report concentrated on the victim. As you say it's not an uncommon name, I've got a couple in my tree.

Hi,

The newspaper article reporting on his execution described John Doidge as a very forlorn, neglected outcast - the illegitimate child of a most sinful women who placed John into the care of an 'old women' (wonder how old that one was  :) ). He was given very little nurture and left to grow up without guidance. Therefore he was rather rebellious all through his life.

Perhaps you need to look for a John Doidge who is not living with his parents?

Thanks, JJ. It looks as if you may have cracked it. That certainly matches much of what we know about John Doidge. It appears that Jane had a second child in 1834 but she only survived a few weeks.

I presume John's father was Henry Berry but a quick search has revealed no obvious candidates unless Berryman in considered.

There is a Jane Doidge born Calstock 1816, daughter of John, bargeman, who married in 1839. She seems to be the only person of that name baptised in Cornwall within a reasonable time frame, according to the Cornwall OPC site, yet in 1841 there is a Jane Doidge b c 1816 living in Calstock together with children that could be those of John, son of John, the bargeman. Pity no relationships are shown. Needs more research!
