This might be young Rachel showing under her mother's maiden name of Blyth in Edinburgh for 1891:

John Blyth 24, dairyman b. Selkirk
Rashel Blyth 57, mother b. Roxburghshire
David Blyth 20 Brewers Labourer b. Selkirk
Chcules ? Blyth 18 Brewers Labourer Unemployed b. Selkirk
Rachel Blyth 7, grandchild b. Hawick
Martha Blyth 5, grandchild b. Dumfries-shire....maybe another Black grandchild?

"You didn't answer Monica's question about whether Agnes describes herself as a widow in 1901, which is crucial. There is no point searching for James' death before 1901if he's still alive!

I see that a search of Scotlandspeople index for the 1901 census reveals a James Black aged 46 in Wilton, which is part of Hawick. Have you ruled him out? "

I`ve just read through this again as I am giving it another go !! I`ve had another look at the 1901 Census and you are right; Agnes describes herself as head and married, so I`m now going to investigate the James Black aged 46 in Wilton. His age seems right with someone born in 1855.

Thanks everybody
