I see that a search of Scotlandspeople index for the 1901 census reveals a James Black aged 46 in Wilton, which is part of Hawick. Have you ruled him out? "


I`ve just read through this again as I am giving it another go !! I`ve had another look at the 1901 Census and you are right; Agnes describes herself as head and married, so I`m now going to investigate the James Black aged 46 in Wilton. His age seems right with someone born in 1855.
