Shollingstown, Kilkenny
« on: Tuesday 11 September 12 11:01 BST (UK) »
Looking up the marriage of James Brien from Wicklow and Margaret Lannigan from Kilkenny which took place in Bootersown RC Church in February 1897 the marriage record states that her parents, James and Margaret Lannigan came from Shollingstown, Co. Kilkenny. Does anybody know where Shollingstown is or was? Googling it doesn't produce anything.

closest match I can see is the townland of Shortallstown, which is near Callan.

You can search for towns and townlands at : www.thecore.com/seanruad

Thanks for that. I looked the place up on the Irish Placenames Database and it rsponded with a place called Goslingtown so I don't think that can be correct either. Margaret lannigan junior hada  brother called John Lannignan and judging by the marriage record and baptism records for her children may have a had a married sister called Brigid/Bridget MacEvoy.

Have you seen the register or just a transcript ?

Wonder if Shollingstown is a misreading...

Shane,

Yes, I wonder about that also. The marriage record is a transcript from the IFHF who have certainly given me inaccurate info in the past. I may have to approach the Parish to look at the Registers but as my success ratio asking RC clergy for access to their registers is pretty low I won't be holding my breath!

Had a quick look at the 1901 census and Griffith's for Shortallstown - no sign of any Lannigins that I see on either.

This kind of RC marriage records usually mention if the parents are not alive - wouldn't usually see an address for them otherwise, so worth searching for them on the 1901 census..

Do you have a civil cert for this marriage ?
Occupation for James Lannigan might help...
