Polruan Old Photos
« on: Thursday 13 September 12 09:09 BST (UK) »
Would anyone be able to assist me with any old photos from around 1800 -1900 of The Quay at Polruan looking landward and Fore Street. I would love to see where my Great Grandmother rented a shop and worked (Middle shop of three on the Quay- A Drapers), and lived Fore Street. Took photos last weekend, but shops have gone there is now a Doctors Surgery next to where they were, and Fore Street (The Hill) is all tarmac and modern with wheelie bins. Any assistance would be most appreciated. They moved from Highway into Polruan when GGrandfather became a Master Sailor. I have a modern day photo taken of Highway last weekend, again if anyone has an old one!!

Thank You.

Hello Graham
You could try looking at the Francis Frith photo collection. I've just had a quick look online and there are a few of Polruan.

Thanks Croxia, I have had a look at those and they do not really show the shops on the quay, which is what I am really after, along with Fore Street and Highway. Obliged for your suggestion however, thank you.

I have found out that my ancestors lived at 116 Fore Street Polruan, and had a drapers shop, the middle shop of three on the quay! Polruan or Fowey not sure. Any advice out there on how to obtain an old photo perhaps, around 1900.

Thank you in anticipation

The drapers shop run by my great aunt who was a widow as her husband William Langmaid was lost at sea was the centre shop of three on POLRUAN quay. Supposedly there was a wool shop next door as run by another family. Supposedly the 1911 Census has this aunt and children living at 116 Fore Street, but I have since been told that Fore Street only goes up to 49. Having not seen the actual census I am slightly confused. Would anyone have any information or photos perhaps. Any assistance would be most appreciated.

1901 census is 116

Possibly the buildings have been renumbered over the years.

Many thanks for that, cannot open the actual census as I do not subscribe. You have obviously seen it though so that gives me confidence that there is a 116. Thank you very much.

For FamilySearch, you just need to register, it's free. I've just had another look at the 1901 and I think that the enumerator has used the schedule number as the street number. The census district 9 starts with no. 1 and goes up to 276 & 277, the Boys' & Girls' Board Schools.
