Thanks for your reply, I hadn't considered a name change, but think this could possibly be the answer. I also have Robert Bell's marriage certificate 27th December 1902 and his Father's profession is a Tailor the same as the 1871 census in York.  The other detail is that James is now called James McGregor Bell and Robert is now called Robert McGregor Bell.  The Plot thickens!!!

The baptism record for 10 Sep 1876 says birth date of 1 April 1873.

I have found the baptism but have not found the birth date. Care to share the source?

Hi,

I am sure Sue won`t mind me answering.  The birth date is recorded on the actual parish record image.

No sure if this link will work:

Thanks for that link. It works but I can't see the date of birth. I can see the image of the register page and the details for Roberts baptism.
1876 Sept 10, Robert, parents James and Mary Bell, 5 Elloft St, Bill Poster.
but thats all. Can't see a date of birth. What am I doing wrong? Thanks  for the link.

Hi it was Brother John William Adam Bell that was born 1st April, 1873 - top of the page that I posted.  William was 8 on the 1881 census.

Hi All

It seems we're baffled all over Britain by this one.. My Great Grandfather was John William/William John Bell born 1873 in Leeds. He is middlesborough in the 1911 with his wife Janet, son norman and son William john. On his marriage and death certificate his mother is Mary Strange and James Bell, James may have changed profession but in my grt grandfathers marriage cert it says Brass finisher not Bill poster as in 1881 census.

G.Bell (or is it Adam haha) Scotland

Hi everyone, who replied to my first Post.  It looks as though you were right Mosiefish, regarding change of name from Adams to Bell.  Just read the post from Graham Bell about his Great Grandfather (John William/William John Bell) whose parents were named as Mary Strange and James Bell. Still trying to find out why the family moved from York to Manchester and apparently changed names.
Will keep you all informed, AlmaB
