Phthisis is an old word for tuberculosis. This website is good for causes or death, but I couldn't find phllusis. I'll get back to you if I find anything else.

Good luck

Hi,
This has been discussed before on Rootschat, I did a search of the site by just typing "Phthisis" and up came lots of information/threads.
Try this link
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,31769.0.html
has lots of information on this thread.
Good luck

thankyou newbie  :)

seeing as though i still cant find anything on 'phllusis' i think this is what its supposed to say. The copy i have is in print but the person who did the copy might have been having a rough day.

Phllusis:Phthisis   hmmmm

I did find some more on Phthisis, prounounced TIE-tis, its a greek word meaning "dwindling or wasting away"

Just a thought, what about pertussis (whooping cough) or syphillis?
Don't know the age or gender of the person your death certificate is for, or when the death was registered. sometimes the spoken word (with local accents) can be difficult I suppose when the person writing the certificate is not sure of what is said, especially if the informant can't write/read.
As you say the person copying/transcribing the certificate for you could also have got it wrong? if it was a handwritten certificate she was copying the writing may not have been very legible, then you have a problem..
hmm, pertussis, syphillis, phthisis..

Its a female aged 25, the death was 1875 in sheffield. It says that she's a widow, he was the same age as her and died somewhere between 1871-1874. I also think one if not 2 of their daughters died.
Either it was just bad luck or it was something catching.
