The 'Jordan' Family - Uphall / Broxburn - Completed
« on: Sunday 16 September 12 21:54 BST (UK) »
Can any one help please.  I am trying to trace family members who moved from Ireland in the 1880/90's and worked in the Shale Mines.

I have found my Grandfather (Anthony) and two of his brothers ( John and William) in the 1891 - 1901 Censuses living in Uphall. I am informed that another of his brothers Patrick also moved to the same area and worked in the area the whole of his life, but I cannot find him on the Censuses.

Anthony - 1901 Census shows him at Main Street, Uphall with his brother. He left Scotland in 1910 to visit his cousin in Canada, and then settle in Ireland.

John - 1891 census shows him at East End, Uphall, 1901 census at Main Street, Uphall with 3 children. Relatives tell me he stayed in the Broxburn area going into the Transport business before taking up Farming during WW1. He had 10 children and 2 sons still farm in the area.

William -  1891 census shows him at East End, Uphall. He had 5 children born in Uphall/Broxburn before moving to Alberta, Canada around 1913.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Listerdale.

If the missing brother Patrick worked in the same Industry (Shale Mines/Shale Oil) he could be
in any one of a dozen other villages in the area, Shale Mines were sunk all over West Lothian
from one border to the other, also these Mines served Oil Refining Works where many of my
family worked.
Have a look at the Uphall Web site if you have not looked there, I live in the area and can get
you a picture or take a look around.

Hi James,
Thank you for your message. I had come across the Uphall website.

I have now found Patrick on the 1901 Scottish Census through the 'scotlandspeople.gov.uk' website with no problem.  I had been using Ancestry, but their entry must have a serious transcription error as I could not find it using any variant of the name.

He was living on The Gardens, Broxburn.

My task now is to try and find any living descendants of John or Patrick.

Thank you for the offer of photographs which I will not take up at the moment.

Hi Listerdale

Have you come across this site www.scottishshale.co.uk/index.html - great resource for the Scottish Shale Oil Industry.

Monica  :)

Hi Monica,

Thank you for the hyperling for the website, which I had not come across before.  I have had a quick look at the site, it will be interesting to read the history.

There is no information about my relatives in the Genealogy section.

To Monica,

Could you please mark this subject as 'Completed'?

Following a Google enquiry, I made a telephone call last evening.  The person who answered was a Granddaughter of one of my two Great Uncles who stayed in Scotland.

Thank all readers for your suggestions.

Thank you for the information on how to mark a topic 'completed'.  I have not had to do it before, but I had seen topics that had been marked.
