Norton in the Moors
« on: Monday 17 September 12 12:01 BST (UK) »
I have been looking at ancestors from Norton in the Moors in Staffordshire and have got back to 1666.  All the village information I can find says that the church there was built in the 1800's so where would these marriages, christenings, etc. have taken place before that?  Also, the names are unusual e.g. Johannis, Mariae, Janae, Ranalphus, Richardus, etc.  Are these normal names for the time?

Names would be Latin forms. Some information and examples here:

Thank you.  Are you saying that there was a church called St Bartholomew before the present one which was built in 1738?

I just had a thought ....

How could you have got back to 1666 if you say that the church was only built in the 1800s?  ;D Don't you have sources for the bmd's for your family, which should say which church the events occurred in ....  :-\

The link I provided says the church was rebuilt in 1738, so presumably there was already a church on the site prior to this, and the records commence in 1574.

From the catalogue for Staffordshire RO:
"Norton-le-Moors, St Bartholomew, Formed 1779, formerly chapelry of Stoke on Trent St Peter EP" ie it became a parish in 1779, prior to that it was a chapelry under the parish of St Peter in Stoke. Other chapelries seem to have few marriages - these being mainly at the parish church so prior to 1779 you may find there are more for Norton people in the Stoke registers than in those of Norton.

Registers held at Stafford
Bap 1576-1964
Mar 1576-1970
Bur 1576-1957

Registers held at Lichfield
Bap 1660-1852
Mar 1660-1851
Bur 1660-1852

is the link - C of E registers held are in the first Guide to Sources as a PDF download.

Thank you - I think that explains it although the church records I have been looking at show christenings & marriages in the 1600's at Norton in the Moors so I was unsure if a church had existed before the one built in the 1800's which I guess must be the case if the register commences in 1574.
