« on: Tuesday 18 September 12 21:35 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Some of 'my lot' were living at the following places on the census returns but I can't find anything about them.  Presumably they are no longer standing so I've contacted the local library but I also wondered if anyone here may have come across them.....

2 LANGNEY FORT VILLAS in 1891
SPRINGFIELD COTTAGE,  WESTHAM in 1901
LAKERS GARDENS, WESTHAM  in 1891

Thankyou

Hopefully someone will come up with more info than this, but if all else fails, the following might prove useful.
Sussex Family History Group's list of publications includes a Lewes & District 1894 OS Map.

This one Inch to the Mile 1894 Ordnance Survey Map 319. has on the reverse a large scale map of Westham and Pevensey Castle.
It also comes with an article about the Levels, Heathfield, Hailsham, Uckfield, Alfriston, Hurstmonceux, the Iron Industry, Windmills and Railways.   Published by Alan Godfrey.

Perhaps there is a Rootschatter that already has a copy of the above who is willing to drop you a line to say whether it contains the information you require.

Hi petmas,

Yes, I found that Fort Villas on Google.  Apparently it was somewhere else at the time of the census.  The local library have now replied and said it was on the corner of Bexhill Rd. and Wallsend Rd.  They are sending me some maps so hopefully that will help.

I agree, Springfield Farm was probably the site of the new Springfield Close. Thanks for looking.

Some pics would be nice but I bet there aren't any  :(

Hi Roy G,

Thanks for the info.  I'll see which maps the local library send me and also enquire about the one you mention.

Kind regards,
Julie

Not wishing to argue with the library but Wallsend Rd/ Bexhill Rd is the heart of Pevensey village and no where near Langney. Langney fort was between Martellos   66 & 67 under what is now Sovereign Harbour. See  http://sussexhistoryforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=489.0 for a plan
Mason ( Leics, Lincs, Cambs, Rutland)  Packer( Berks, Middx) Bearne, Vining , Sugar Shugar (Somerset, Pennsylvania & S Wales)

Yes I see what you mean.  The census reads Westham not Pevensey so what you say makes sense.

I'll delve a bit deeper.

Hi, I know that you have marked this as completed. However I was searching the web tonight and found your post. It made me wonder if you had found all the info on the places. My Grandfather was brought up at Springfield Cottage where his grandfather (Felix) ran the Laker market gardens! I live just down the road and can assure you the cottage is still standing!  :) Pip
