"Citizen and Founder of the City of London"
« on: Saturday 22 September 12 17:27 BST (UK) »
I recently discovered the will of an ancestor of mine, Daniel French of St Boltoph Aldgate. In this he hescribes  himself as a "Citizen and Founder of the City of London" and I wonder if anyone could shed any light on what this phrase means.

I also found his son Robert in the records of "Freedom of the City Admission Papers 1682-1925" on Ancestry which also refers to Daniel as a "Citizen and Founder of the City of London".

I have also found a will for a Roger French who I think may be Daniel's father.

Hi

Citizen means he had served his apprenticeship, or received it through patrimony with one of the London guilds and had become a freeman of the city. A founder was a foundry man casting metal

I've found this record and I have also now found Roger's will. It now looks to me that Daniel (son of Roger) who was apprenticed to Samuel Pillchard of the Founders Company is my ancestor.

I'd now like to know where to look for a record of Roger's apprenticeship. I know from his will that he had four children: Daniel, Henry, Sarah and Mary. I would also like to find if Henry had any children or left a will since Robert French (son of Daniel) refers to his cousin "Henry French of Scotts Yard, Bush Lane" in his will.

I have been unable to locate any baptism records for any of Roger's children althogh I expect they were born in the 1660s-1670s probably in London.
