Clowne Colliery Accident

I am wondering if anyone has any information about a fatal accident at Southgate Colliery, Clowne that happened on 11th October 1919.

My great grandmother's brother was killed in it, and I would like to find out more.  There were multiple fatalities, so this must have been reported in the local paper.  Would anyone know which paper that might be, and where they are now archived?

I can only find this, accident 2 days later right year , month and colliery.



Men killed:
Name:   NOUGH Albert aged 28, a stallman and John Thomas White aged 55, a stallman

Date:   13/10/2019
Year:   1919
Colliery:   Southgate

Two ripping shots had been fored and three stallman were removing debris. Shots left a portion of stone and it was examined and thought to be safe and they set aprop under it but there was a bump and stone fell. 2 killed.

Brilliant!  Thanks for that.  John Thomas White was my great grandmother's brother.  So it seems there were two deaths then.  Still, it should be in the paper.  I will make the enquiries as suggested.  Many many thanks.  More info welcome if anyone has it!

In Wills and Probate the death is recorded as 11th October at Southgate Colliery.  By google searching searching I also found the Nouch guy on someone's family tree page- also recorded as 11th October.

Hi,

The Worksop Guardian is a paper local to the area that the accident happened, it may well have been reported in that.

Bassetlaw have a good library, and family history resource, and are very helpful - it might be worth picking their brains! If they don't have a newspaper archive, I am sure they will be able to help.

Thanks for that link Claire, What a wonderful site.  A lot of my ancestors were coal miners around the Pinxton / South Normanton area.
