Hi all - nice work whilst I slept... great info so far.

Answering in "backward" fashion:

Deb - yes, I have all stuff on nsgenealogy.com on Hugh and descendants.

No, Hugh married in Nova Scotia in 1834.  I am pretty sure that he and bro. Alex must have arrived 1820-1834.  Going to a local LDS FHC tonight that has 1st vol of Whyte Book, and a 2 volume CD of immigrants to NS. 9 (Smith book).

Hugh was definitely born Nov 1804.  I have his bapt cert. from scotlandspeople.  He was a apparently a farmer in the early (1838, 1851) censuses and one son's bio claimed he was also a teacher.  see:
http://archive.org/stream/memorialbiograph00lewi#page/386/mode/2up/search/chisholm

Great info on Bayne!  I am going to go look at it right now.

Additional which may or may not be good:  The parents of all these children may be buried in Old Kiltarlity Cem:  Alexander 1766-1827; Mary Robertson Chisholm 1770-1850.

William, youngest son who went to Australia, may have been there by/before 1839.

Let me know if I should post any of the birth/bapt notices I have bought for these people.

This should be an interesting adventure.

spidermonkey,

I really like what you found on Ann's family and on the Baynes (I jumped to a bad conclusion on possible "Bain" spelling; probably because I have an ancestral McBain family also).

I can't find either Ann or Roderick Munro in Statutory Deaths on scotlandspeople site... odd.  But if gravestone date of 49 yrs old in 1856, then it fills in the gap between Hugh in 1804 and Margaret in 1809.

Anyone else struck at how relatively short-lived this family seemed to be?

[Added a couple of hours later from above]  Found this interesting possibility"  The Lovat, Loch Ness was built as a station hotel in 1860's. The first recorded date of the Lovat being a hotel was thought to have been in 1869, known simply as "The Inn" and run by one Murdoch Bayne. It was changed, however when the railway was built through Fort Augustus to Spean Bridge, to "The Lovat Arms & Station Hotel."  In wikipedia and elsewhere under Lovat Hotel.

Hi Nick

Glad to see you.

I wonder if the Passenger lists are the correct ones for your Chisholms ...hopefully the Whyte Book reveals something new for you.

Do all the children's baptisms/birth certs reveal their mother's maiden name?

Have you followed all the children of Hugh and Catherine in NS?

There's so much to discover ...not sure where to start.   ;D

Nick ...just read your latest link ... so some of them ended up in the US ... I had seen some Chisholms b NS in the USA but had no way of relating them to your family!

Nice to have these snippets of info!

How far back have you actually gone with Hugh's parents? Have you spotted them on any censuses or had they died before 1841?

deb

added ...sorry, just reread and see that Alexander, the dad, died 1827, so of course he wouldn't be on a census.  :-\  :-[

Yes and yes.

Only Daniel, the youngest, ended up in US.

Did find Mary Robertson Chisholm with son Donald in 1841 census.  Would like to verify that she died in 1850 and husband Alex died in 1827... just a statement without validation at the mo'.

From here http://www.ambaile.org.uk/en/newspapers/search_results.jsp?newspaper=0&PrimarySubject=0&startyear=*&endyear=*&keywords=&StartRow=94726&MaxRows=25

it says that Mary Munro Murdoch, dau of Roderick Munro, innkeeper of Evanton died in Australia.  Newspaper dated 1857

Hi there,

1856, there’s a death registered in Victoria Australia of Mary Munro MURDOCH, aged 24, daughter of Roderick MUNRO and Ann KEEPER.  Registration No. 4435.     Information on Victoria BDMs is usually as informative as on Scottish ones.    You can download images of VIC BDMs immediately for around $20 Aust at this link (note the Ref no. I provided will be helpful) :
https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-search?action=purchaseImage

Here’s what you should expect on Vic BDMs…  the completeness and accuracy of the information depends on the knowledge of the informant.

Hi JM,

Great find!

Ann Keeper? ... I need to reread the whole Munro/Murdoch section.

from Nick:
Ann born between 1807 and 1811(?) not in indexes; Ann married Roderick Munro and had a daughter Catherine Munro who married an "Alexander Munro" and lived in London in 1858:
Piece: SCT1841/70 Place: Kiltearn - Ross and Cromarty Enumeration District: 2  Civil Parish: Kiltearn Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 2 Page: 4 Address: Balcony Street
(also found her dau Catherine Munro nee Munro in Kensington in 1871 and 1881.)

Finally, can someone try to parse the section of the Gazette notice that starts "Isabella Murdoch residing at Pentridge, Australia..."?   I think it means Ann's dau Catherine had a dau
Mary, probably out of wedlock, before she married Alex Munro.  There is indeed a 9 yr old Mary Munro living with Donald in 1841 Boleskine census, and I think it is probably Isabella's mother. Apparently Isabella married James Murdoch and they had a child before
1858.  Do you agree with my interpretation of this paragraph?

Yep the index has transcribed Mary Munro Murdoch's mum as Ann KEEPER.   ???    I think elsewhere on this thread it is noted as Ann CHISHOLM .....
