"Isabella Murdoch residing at Pentridge, Australia..."?   I think it means Ann's dau Catherine had a dau
Mary,"

PENTRIDGE is in Melbourne in the state of Victoria.    (Usually remembered because of HM Pentridge Prison)

Australia is a Federation of six former colonies.  Our records are thus usually found separately within each State/territory.   Sorry, I am not that familiar with Victoria records as I am a tad NSW centric.

Fingers crossed there's an Aussie RChatter around who can help further.  Perhaps Tephra can check and contact them.

Cheers,  JM

Hi again

This is from the article that Nick posted:
Catherine Munro, daughter of the deceased Ann Chisbolm, sister of the deceased debtor, who was married to Roderick Munro, Innkeeper, Evanton, Ross-shire, wife of Alexander Munro, of 48, Campden Street, Campden Hill,  Kensington, London, or elsewhere furth of Scotland ; the said Alexander Munro for himself and his interest; Isabella Murdoch, residing at Pentridge, near Melbourne, Australia, only child of the late Mary Munro or Murdoch, (daughter of the said Catherine Munro), sometime, and last while in Scotland, resident at Evanton aforesaid, wife of James Murdoch, who resides at Pentridge aforesaid j the said James Murdoch for himself and for his interest, and Administrator for his said child ;

This is how I understand it:
Ann Chisholm was married to Roderick Munro. Catherine Munro, their daughter, was married to Alexander Munro (London).
Catherine Munro had a daughter, Mary Munro ( her illegitimate dau, who can be found on 1841 census with Donald, the deceased in article) who married James Murdoch ...they had Isabella.

Did Mary Monro take on the Murdoch name? But Mary Monro (who married J Murdoch) is the illegit d/o Catherine and not Roderick MUNRO and Ann KEEPER.

so Ann Chisholm= Roderick Munro
they have Catherine Munro
she has Illegit dau, Mary Munro
Catherine Munro = Alexander Munro in London
Mary Munro (d/o Catherine) = James Murdoch
they have Isabella Murdoch

Am I confused????

LOL :) :)

Isabella Murdoch, residing at Pentridge, near Melbourne, Australia, only child of the late Mary Munro or Murdoch, (daughter of the said Catherine Munro), sometime, and last while in Scotland, resident at Evanton aforesaid, wife of James Murdoch

I read this as >....

Catherine Munro had Mary Munro (she is the illegitimate daughter who is on the 1841 census ...long before Catherine married Alexander Munro in 1858 in London).
Isabella Murdoch is the only child Mary Munro or Murdoch (Murdoch being her married name) and Jame Murdochs.

Catherine has Mary, before she marries Alex
Mary Munro marries James Murdoch and has Isabella

Errrr.....

Should I be looking for the arrival to OZ of :

Mrs Isabella MURDOCH (wife of James)
Mr James MURDOCH (husband of Isabella)

Mary Munro MURDOCH (dau of Roderick MUNRO and Ann KEEPER/CHISHOLM

Mary Munro MURDOCH (daughter of Catherine MUNRO) formerly of Evanton Scotland

What name for the child of "the said James MURDOCH" ......  .... IS THAT CHILD "ISABELLA MURDOCH"

Remembering that the index has the death in 1856 for Mary Munro MURDOCH at age 24, so I cannot figure how a child of Mary would be old enough to have a married daughter in 1857.

Hi JM

I am obviously reading this differently to you ...it's 11pm here. I shall reread.

Please don't scream at me in caps!

And yes ..it looks like I misinterpreted the article:

Nick post:
Finally, can someone try to parse the section of the Gazette notice that starts "Isabella Murdoch residing at Pentridge, Australia..."?   I think it means Ann's dau Catherine had a dau Mary, probably out of wedlock, before she married Alex Munro.  There is indeed a 9 yr old Mary Munro living with Donald in 1841 Boleskine census, and I think it is probably Isabella's mother. Apparently Isabella married James Murdoch and they had a child before 1858.

apologies

Sorry for the CAPS

I am using my e-reader and it can be a tad difficult to type from their tiny charcoal coloured keyboard.  I was trying to get the surnames in CAPS and the thingy got itself 'stuck'.   Very  :-[ here.

 :)  Its lunchtime here.

No problem JM ...I was kinda getting on the defensive ...apologies!

Nick also says this:
"Isabella Murdoch residing at Pentridge, Australia..."?
There is indeed a 9 yr old Mary Munro living with Donald in 1841 Boleskine census, and I think it is probably Isabella's mother.

If Isabella is a Murdoch , and Mary is a Munro ...wouldn't Mary have had to have married James Murdoch to have Isabella MURDOCH?

 :)

So did Mary MUNRO marry James MURDOCH ....  It would be unusual in Aust for Mary to then transfer her nee name become her middle name.    The VIC dc should show if that particular Mary Munro MURDOCH was a married woman, and also give the name of her spouse, her place of birth, when and where married, her years in the colonies and the details of children of the marriage.

I struggle when searching Victoria's records, as I am far more familiar with New South Wales records.  Victoria became a separate colony (hived off from NSW) in June 1851.   If Mary MUNRO married James MURDOCH and they had a child named Isabella, then I would expect to find info about the child (at least her gender and her then age) on Mary's 1856 dc.

Do we know where/when Isabella Murdoch (dau of Mary Munro who was aged 9 in 1841 at Boleskine) was born?

Cheers JM
