nickgc's Scavenger Hunt...Everyone Welcome To Join In

Welcome to this weeks Scavenger Hunt and I think there's something here for everyone to get their teeth in to.. it's a bit complicated, so please read it through thoroughly.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Barbara

                                      *****************

HUGH CHISHOLM chris.24 NOV 1804 Kiltarlity, INV, parents Alexr & Mary Robertson Chisholm was my 3rd great grandfather.  He died Nov 11 or 12, 1867 in Sutherland's River, Pictou, Nova Scotia (NS) and is buried in Telford Cemetery in Pictou.  He married Catherine Munro 14 Aug 1834; Rev John McRae officiating.  Catherine is possibly a daughter of Hugh Munro and Margaret Calder, INV, but we can pursue this later.

For a while now I have been leaning toward the possibility that Alex. and Mary were his parents, but had no proof.  The other day I started tracing his probable siblings (other kids of Alex & Mary on IGI), and found a death cert for Donald (the eldest) on scotlandspeople.  Alastair on the Chisholm Genealogies International forum then directed me to this very pertinent document:

  http://www.edinburgh-gazette.co.uk/issues/6819/pages/1271/page.pdf

It proves just about 100% that my guess as to Hugh's parents and siblings was a good one.  It also names a sister who is not listed in IGI (actually, "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950").

I'd like to find out:

1) when Hugh, and his brother Alexander, came to Nova Scotia if possible;

2) when Alexander died (I've only found him living with Hugh's widowed wife and their son's family in 1871);

3) additional ancestry of Hugh, et al.'s parents, Alexander Chisholm (merchant), and Mary Robertson;
-------------

To make this challenge of wider interest, I would also like to see if anyone can find the other siblings mentioned in the Edinburgh Gazette notice linked above.  Here they are in birth order, with some details I have compiled from various sources:

1)  Donald c. 28 Dec 1796 d 1857, Kiltarlity.  NOTE:  I have plenty on him, and since he had no children we probably don't need to pursue.

2)  Isabel(la) b. 10 Dec 1799 c. 12 Dec 1799, Kiltarlity d. 1852; apparently never married; buried with brother Donald at Drumtemple Churchyard (see
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,616299.msg4650743.html#msg4650743)
Is also with Donald (as is mother Mary) in 1841 Boleskine census.

3)  Alexander b. 29 May 1802 c. 8 Jun 1802, Kiltarlity d Huh; this was brother who was (by implication) in NS at least 1858-1871.  He was a teacher and I wonder if he attended college in Scotland; his brother Donald went to King's College, Aberdeen.  Alex less important since he didn't have children.

4)  Hugh b. Nov 1804 c. 24 Nov 1804, Kiltarlity d. 1867.  Except as stated above, no further details needed.  I have researched all his children and some of their descendants.

5) Margaret Chisholm  Married a McDonald; lived Boleskine (a widow) in 1858;
birth:   28 May 1809 c. 1 Jun 1809, Kiltarlity; did she have children?  who did she marry? When did she die?

6) Elis(z)abeth Chisholm  b. 5 Jan 1812  c. 15 Jan 1812, Kiltarlity;  married Murdoch Bain; I don't think I have found them. Gazette article spells surname "Bayne".

7)  William Chisholm  In July 1858 was thought to be in Australia
b. 2 Aug 1814   c. 9 Aug 1814;  When did he go to Australia?  Did he marry? Have children?  When did he die?

Cool  Ann born between 1807 and 1811(?) not in indexes; Ann married Roderick Munro and had a daughter Catherine Munro who married an "Alexander Munro" and lived in London in 1858:
Piece: SCT1841/70 Place: Kiltearn - Ross and Cromarty Enumeration District: 2  Civil Parish: Kiltearn Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 2 Page: 4 Address: Balcony Street
(also found her dau Catherine Munro nee Munro in Kensington in 1871 and 1881.)

Finally, can someone try to parse the section of the Gazette notice that starts "Isabella Murdoch residing at Pentridge, Australia..."?   I think it means Ann's dau Catherine had a dau
Mary, probably out of wedlock, before she married Alex Munro.  There is indeed a 9 yr old Mary Munro living with Donald in 1841 Boleskine census, and I think it is probably Isabella's mother. Apparently Isabella married James Murdoch and they had a child before
1858.  Do you agree with my interpretation of this paragraph?

Hi - it is past 2:30 am here so I won't be up much longer.  I probably won't be back online until about 8 or 9 pm UK time, so please don't think I am ignoring any questions.

Tephra:  I have two questions about possible extraneous characters in OP:

3)  Alexander b. 29 May 1802 c. 8 Jun 1802, Kiltarlity d Huh;

and

I've no credits for Scotlands People at the moment, so working from Ancestry's interesting transcriptions  ::)

Murdock Bayne and Eliza Bayne are married and living in Megstone, Kiltarlity by the 1841 census.  He is a publican (also, note spelling of his name if you are looking on Ancestry).  No children shown.

Isabella Bayne marries Quintin McLennan (Physician and Surgeon) in 1883.  Both of her parents are deceased by then.
