Newcastle Parishes Map
« on: Tuesday 25 September 12 20:44 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any idea of how the parishes of Newcastle connect to each other?  I have a family of Embleton's that I'm trying to trace the early baptisms of around Newcastle.

I have:
Henry Embleton bn c1803 in Morpeth (according to census data) who married Mable Lumsdon of Warkworth (bn 1809) at St Johns in Newcastle 1 May 1831.

From 1842 their children are all baptised at St Andrew, but there are three earlier children that I'm trying to trace the baptisms for.  They weren't baptised at St Andrew and I'm looking at St John again in case I missed them.... but what other parishes should I look at?  I can see on Family Search that there are a number of Newcastle parishes but I don't know where they are within the city in relation to St Andrew and St John.

The poeple I'd like to find baptism records for are:

John Embleton c1833
George Embleton c1836
Elizabeth Embleton c1838

On the census when they're still at home their birthplace is listed as Newcastle.

Thanks
Brenda

Do you know how long I've searched for this!!  I've typed his name in Family Search many times and haven't come up with this info!

And Hamilton too, nice catch!  And I see you now have George also.  I really need to start thinking outside the box!  I obviously also need to have another look at those St Andrew BT's. as well.

Thanks,
Brenda

Brenda,  in the era of early 1800s, there were only 4 parishes ( C of E) within the city of Newcastle.
St Andrew's, All Saints, St Nicholas's and St John's.

Follow the link below to see how the four neighbour each other.

Thank you Michael, that's an excellent map and exactly what I wanted.

Looking at the BT baptisms for St Andrew in 1834, there is only one person baptised on January 12th and it's not my John!  Plus the entire page has a line through it so I'm not sure what that means.  Whether it's completely wrong and crossed out, or just has a line through it from someone checking it or transcribing it.

 Brenda,

After the good work of Artkane, it looks as though you now have the baptisms you sought !

Just a couple of wee snippetts for you......

Mable/Mabel, according to censuses after 1841, was born in Blyth/Cowpen- not Warkworth.

The family are living at Spital Tongues colliery on 1841 and 1851 censuses.
The pit was sunk sometime in early 1830s.

The Parish of St Andrew's was comprised of three "townships", Jesmond, Fenham and St Andrew's.
Spital Tongues lay within the Jesmond township.

But perhaps Henry and Mable were living within the bounds of St John's Parish ( comprised of the townships
of St John's, Westgate, Elswick and Benwell- but Benwell was not part of city of Newcastle in the era).
Then moved to Spital Tongues soon after marriage ?

1861 census has Elizabeth born at Spital Tongues.
I cant see similar specific birth places for John and George, but probably also born Spital
   Tongues.

Remember BTs are just periodic copies, and sometimes abbreviated copies, of the original parish
registers.  In a couple of days I shall have a look at film of originals, to see if there is clarification !
