I have Willliam Currie b 16/1/1851 North Berwick d Rowchester Berwick 30/3/1912 and married to Janet Henderson Crawford b15/6/1851 d Calcutta 1885. Family lore says that william was connected to P & O shipping and also monument to both in the Western Cemetary Dundee. There were also two children William and Mary. Would like to find out more about the family. Any ideas? Thanks Iain

Hi Iain

There are references to a Sir William Crawford Currie, (1884-1961), MD and later Chaiman of the British India Steam Navigation Company and of P&O.

www.poheritage.com/Upload/our-story/company-guides/British_India/British%20India%20Steam%20Navigation%20Company%20-%20Web.pdf

Willam Crawford Currie was born in Calcutta on 4 May 1884, eldest son of William and Janet/Jessie. You have a death date for his mother the following year in Calcutta?

Amongst other sources, his obituary appeared in The Times on 4 July 1961.

A 16yr old William C Currie, born in India, shows in Edinburgh in 1901 as a 'patient' at 48 Moray Place.

Janet Henderson Crawford and William Currie look to have married in Dundee in 1881. Their marriage cert, if you haven't viewed it, will let you confirm their parents' details (likely you will have these already?).

Was Janet's family from Dundee originally? Just thinking of the mention of a memorial at the Western Cemetery that you referred to and the location of the marriage.

There is a William Currie, a merchant from Berwick, aged 31, showing at the Lambs Hotel in Dundee on the 1881 census.

Monica. Thanks for the info. I have to do more research on the details i gave. I was in western cemetary in dundee and noticed the monument which had the wording which is in my question and later i was going through items that belonged to my father and came across some family trees which mentioned that janet h crawford parents were john crawford and janet henderson and that she and w currie had two children william and mary.i found out that john crawford was a shoe manufacturer in the overgate in dundee.next time i am in dundee i will do more research.

I see now where the monument at the Western Cemetery fits in  :)

Hopefully it will also include dates for deaths for Janet's parents to let you work back. This may be their marriage https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTVZ-DZT

There is one possible family showing on the Dundee and Inveresk censuses. Did father John die young, c. 1857? Possible Will entry for him on Scotlands People which describes a John Crawford as a Leather Merchant in Dundee.

These are the Crawford children in 1861 in Dundee (perhaps mother too had died by then?):

Agnes Crawford 26 b. Dundee
William Crawford 24 b. Cotinburgh, fifeshire (?spl)
Margaret Crawford 22 Bool & Shoe Merchant (maybe for brother above?) b. Perth
Christina Crawford 20 b. Musselburgh, Midlothian
Jessie Crawford 11 b. Musselburgh, Midlothian
Jemima Crawford 8 b. Musselburgh, Midlothian

Address: 55 Overgate, Dundee

The transcription of this entry is messy all round. Hopefully you will get a chance to check the original entry at some point.

A census earlier, 1851, with parents:

John Crawford 43, currier b. Dundee
Janet Crawford 41 b. Pennyenick, Midlothian
William Crawford 14 b. Colinsburgh, Fife
Margaret Crawford 12 b. Perth
Christina Crawford 10 b. Inveresk, Midlothian
Eliza Crawford 7 b. Inveresk, Midlothian
Janes (Janet?) Crawford 1 b. Inveresk, Midlothian

Address: High Street, Mussleburgh, Midlothian

Willam Currie's family, also in 1851:

Daniel Currie 30, Revenue C. Guard Service b. Campbelton, argyllshire
Harriet Currie 27 b. Baston, England
Elis Mary Currie 6 b. Wainfleet, Engl
Mary Jean Currie 4 b. N Berwick, c loth
Harriet Emma Currie 3 b. N Berwick, c loth
William Currie 1 b. N Berwick, e loth
Jane Johnstone 17, servant

Address: C Guard Station, Banff, Banffshire

As you can see from both 1851 censuses, likely both William and Janet were born in 1850 rather than 1851 (was this on the monument?). This looks to be Willam's entry here https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTYH-W7D.
