Mary Severn,I'm Stuck.
« on: Saturday 29 September 12 23:02 BST (UK) »
Mary Severn was born c1811 Kimberley Notts. She married William Goodall in 1835 at St Mary's Leicester and died 1879 in Derby.
There is a possible baptism for Mary Severn Sept 1811 daughter of John and Ann Severn, at Greasley which was possibly the church used by parishoners of Kimberley, but I don't know how to prove it one way or another.
The vwitnesses at the marriage were the parish warden and a co-worker of William's so no help there.Their children were named [in order] Alfred,Ann,Mary and William.
Any suggestions welcomed,
Liz

Mary baptized 22 Sep 1811 had parents John and Amy SEVERNS. There were three other Mary Severn(s) baptized at Greasley in 1808 (the dates are so close that it is hard to say which one married who).

John and Amy had lots more children, but the Greasley baptisms started to record 'abodes' around 1812. When Jonathan (1814) and Richard (1815) were baptized (both sons of John and Amy Severn), the abode was given as "Moorgreen" and father's occupation Framework Knitter.

I think your best shot might be looking for wills for any Severn families in Greasley parish, and hope that one of them mentions a daughter/relative Mary Goodall.

Thank you Alexander,I got Ann from IGI,I had wondered if there was an error in the transcription since Mary seemed to be an only child, now at least I can do some research on the siblings to see if they turn up something useful.
I had thought about wills but so far no luck.

Left Mary for a while but I have done some more research, if she was the daughter of John and Ann,John married Ann Beardsley in 1806 and they had Ann 1810 James 1813 and John 1816,these three children were baptized in Nottingham as non conformists and Ann Bearsley was named as the mother, John was framework knitter from Kimberley.

Mary was baptized 1811 at Greasley if she was a sister to Ann James and John why the difference ,her baptism falls between Ann & James so  the parents hadn't changed their religious affiliation, the Greasley baptism is the only one for parents John and Ann within time frame of 10 years.Liz

Hi,

Just to add to the confusion there is a burial of a Mary Severns of Greasley on 2 Jan 1812 aged 19 weeks making her born abt 22 Sept 1811 so possible the daughter of John and Amy.
Other children of John and Amy that died are:
Samuel buried 7 Dec 1812
Jonathan buried 16 Apr 1814
Richard 25 May 1815
Elizabeth 26 Sept 1807.

There was 3 Mary Severn/s born 1808 and one of them was buried 17 July 1810 aged 2 yrs.

Thank you everyone for your interest.
I have been leaning towards John & Ann for Mary's parents, since Kimberley is her place of birth on the censuses. John & Ann lived in Kimberley, John & Amy lived in Moorgreen, I have tried following siblings of both families forward to see if there were any clues but so far nothing. I am going to do some revision on John & Amy's descendants since some of them appear to have died.
I am not sure how close Moorgreen & Kimberley are, I am guessing that a birth in Moorgreen is definitely that place.
Thanks again Liz

According to the AA route finder, Kimberley and Moorgreen are 4.7 miles apart. But looking at the map there are more direct smaller roads.
Kimberley to Greasley 4.1 miles.
 Moorgreen to Greasley 0.7 miles.

Holy Trinity, the church at Kimberley, was not built until 1847.The old church having fallen into ruin.
http://southwellchurches.history.nottingham.ac.uk/kimberley/hhistory.php

Nuthall to Kimberley is only 2 miles, and the church there was baptising at that time. So they didn't chose the closest!

John & Ann lived in Kimberley, John & Amy lived in Moorgreen,

Notts Girl has established that John and Amy lost their daughter aged 19 weeks. So the Mary baptised in Sept 1811 can sadly be discounted.
Looking at the census images , yes it does say she was born in Kimberley but it also gives various birth years, and as she was older than her husband she could have tweaked her age, as did often happen. This brings in more baptisms for a Mary Severn(s) at Greasley.

There are also 3 marriages (in the correct time frame) for a Mary Severn at Greasley.
27 May 1833 to Joseph Hull
10 Sep 1834 to William Poiser
26 Nov 1837 to Samuel Housley.

Thank you Larkspur,my internet was down so didn't get your message till rather late. The baptism of both Marys took place Sept 22 1811 so  it could be either child that died.I have followed up on the other marriages and the only one I can rule out is the one to Samuel Housley, since that Mary appears to have been born c1798 and had a sister Elizabeth born 1811.
