The connection maybe? A William Bower married Ann Woodward at Mattersey 14/01/1845.

Maybe the money passed down from the mother's side of the family? Or possibly he was just very attached to her :)

Thanks everyone, starting to make more sense now......so it could be that John was Ann Woodward and William Bowers son, and took his mothers maiden name as well, going on to name some of his children with his mothers maiden name as well (thats happened in my family before on another branch) .....although that still doesnt explain where the family were on the 1871 (or 1861) census, and why George Woodward seems to have the same family John W Bowers has got in 1881.....

Has anyone got the details of the Bingham family in the earlier censuses? I think Elizabeth Bingham parents were John and Martha, not sure though. John and Martha Bingham are living a few doors away from Elizabeth and George Woodward on the 1871 census, thats why I wondered if it was the same Elizabeth as is with John on the 1881 census.

Thanks again everyone for your help, its made the Woodward/Bower connection a bit clearer  :)

Just something else to throw in which suggests they may have used the names Bower/Woodward interchangeably

2 baptisms at Clayworth to John and Elizabeth Woodward of Wiseton
John William bp 19/05/1872
Alfred bp 08/11/1874

I'm tempted to say that your Woodwards of 1871 are the same family, with either sloppy work by the enumerator or the person giving the information....

Hi  :)

Don't know what connection there is. Not got very far back on this line.

I have John Bingham chr. 16/01/1822 Gringley on the Hill, parents William Bingham and Elizabeth Whitaker (married 08/05/1821 Gringley on the Hill). Not sure who William's parents are. On the Familysearch IGI I found a William Bingham, son of Ann Bingham, chr. 1798 in North Leverton, but not sure if this is the right one.

I'd be interested if you find any connection.
Regards,
Catherine  :)
