James Begbie
« on: Tuesday 02 October 12 13:22 BST (UK) »
Is my GGG Grandfather.  I've found him marrying Isobel Cockburn in 1804  at St Cuthberts Edinburgh, and his son (another James) being born the same year in Haddington.
I'm stuck now as I dont know how to find any more info.
Any guidance would be great

Thanks

Thanks Claire - I'd found Jean as well, but no other siblings.
Have really come to a dead end with him  :(

Hi Julie

Would be worth you looking here to see if you can find anything further - www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/Search.pl

Have you looked at the children's baptisms that you have found so far (James and Jean)? You might get some further clues from the names of the sponsors. I think this is daughter Jean's entry: www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Baptisms&RecordID=7450474

Wondering whether this could be the James and Peter showing as sponsors to Jean's christening (all guesses here!):

James Begbie 86, blacksmith b. Bolton, Haddington
Peter Begbie 51, son b. Bolton, haddington
Elizabeth Begbie 45, daughter b. Bolton, haddington

Address: Pakend, Bolton, East Lothian

Hi juliebeg,

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0rio/ and  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0rip/ are links for James and Jean birth and baptism on https://familysearch.org. This is a good site for research in this period also. One thing that I noticed, it gives same surname ( apart from spelling mistakes) for both parents.

Found the marriage on Family Search website also, http://www.rootschat.com/links/0riq/. Definitely is Isobell Cockburn, with father William.

Hi Juliebeg, Monica etc,

I have found an 1810 receipt for a Peter Begbie, for 51 days work on a church in Haddington includes carriage of old wood from old church, labour of glazier, smith, thatcher & wright. I wonder if this is the Peter Begbie that Monica found.

See link, http://www.rootschat.com/links/0rpw/

Thanks Tom and all - its certainly possible.
His son James moved down to London and married there and its been comparitively easy
to get to grips with that branch of the tree.  Still with your help I've got something to go on.

Hi Juliebeg,

Not sure where you live, but in Haddington, there is a new resource, the John Gray Centre, has archives of all local media including the Haddingtonshire Courier. I did an online search on "Begbie" and selected some around Bolton, Haddington area. You can phone them and they will post them at 15p plus postage. or may email them to you, if they have time.  Just quote date of issue, page and column, and header of article.
