Tracing my Mackessy ancestors in North Kerry
« on: Tuesday 02 October 12 13:23 BST (UK) »
My great grandfather was Timothy (Thade) Mackessy. He married Mary Healy in or around 1921 (in the Listowel Registration district, possibly Tarbert). He passed away in 1974 and is buried in Tarbert cemetary. His estimated birth year is 1895.

I have asked my great uncles and great aunts about his early years but information is pretty thin, he didn't speak much about his parents or his brothers and sisters. They do know that his mother was Bess (Bessie) Mulvihill, and his father was also Timothy Mackessy. I have found children of Timothy and Bess on familysearch.org, but no record for Timothy Jr. (Thade). I also cannot find a marriage record for Timothy and Bessie.  Bess could be another name for Elizabeth or Eliza or Lizzie or Bessie.

The only Timothy Mackessy I found on the Census records is in Castlecor, near Mallow. County Cork. But I'm not sure if these are my family.

Could someone please help me to find out a little more about Timothy and Bessie? Particularly their marriage record, or the birth of their son Timothy Jr. (Thade)

Thanks

Believe this is your Mackessy family (surname spelling different) in 1901 census

Tarmon West is in the civil parish of Kilnaughtin on the border of Kerry and Limerick - Possible  some of the births were recorded in the registration district of Glin rather than Listowel

The family is still there in 1911 with older children missing-

From this is seems that Timothy and Bessie were married c. 1871 or so.

Hi ballydw.

From your research, I now have the names of my great great grandfathers, Thomas Macessy and John Mulvihill.

Looking a little more into the Baptism of Elizabeth Mulvihill in 1844. I'm hoping that is a match, but I can't be fully sure. I'm wondering where Newtown is? Is it Newtownsandes (now Moyvane)? I can't seem to find a Newtown around Causeway.

Thanks,

David
