George Edwards, Sydney and Willeroo nr Goulburn.
« on: Tuesday 02 October 12 23:57 BST (UK) »
Hello, I'm a relative newcomer. :-[
My Paternal Grandfather, George Edwards, was born Nr Oswestry, Shropshire May 1891.
He travelled to Australia with his brother in law Tom (Edwards), in 1914, returning home in 1920 and married Mabel Jones in early 1920's and started a family.
During his time in NSW he worked at various 'stations', mainly in the New South Wales area, one of which was Willeroo, nr Goulburn (then with the Osborne family).
Luckily I have a pocket note book in which he kept a record of places he worked and visited.
Unfortunately I never knew Grandad as he died when I was only 2, but a few years ago, I transcribed his 'diary' which I now treasure.
When he landed in Sydney in May 1914, on SS Ballarat he was met by his 'cousin Tom'.
Unfortunately I don't have a surname for Tom, as I would dearly like to make contact with decendants, I know that George was related to Kynaston family from Oswestry, but don't know if Tom was this family.
I haven't been able to find another part of the family which emigrated to Aus in the years leading up to 1914.
I am posting this on the very slim chance that someone in Sydney or NSW are might be doing FH research and recognise a link with the above.
Any leads, however tenuous will be welcomed.
I hope to visit in a couple of years (centenary) and visit some of the places Grandad mentions
Many thanks
Phil :)

Not immediately helpful I'm afraid, but here we have some background on Willeroo and original owners (before the Osbornes) who were the Coopers.  Article published in 1914 on death of Robert Cowley Cooper.
The Coopers were pioneers of district (not recent immigrants) and no mention of a Tom  :(

I have researched a little of the history of Willeroo, but hadn't seen this article. At the time Grandad was there, Pat Hamilton Osborne had Willeroo, and during this period went off to War. I have been in touch with the present owners, but unfortunately records from that time have gone.

Many thanks for taking the time on this - I'm not even sure at this stage who his cousin was!, I need to do a bit more research at my end to fathom out who Tom could have been.
Later in his diary, Grandad noted that his Aunty had died suddenly, leaving his Uncle and Cousins, unfortunately no names once again. At this time they lived in Glebe, Sydney.
Later on, he visited his Uncle, who had moved and was building a house in Kingswood (nr Sydney?).
Grandad worked for a short time as a shunter at Penrith Railway station.
Obviously 'Cousin Tom' and Aunty/Uncle had gone out to Australia sometime before 1914, so I could trawl through passenger lists for a family with a Tom likely to have come from the Oswestry area I would think.
Thanks for finding the record re Tom Kynaston. I see that Wagga Wagga is in NSW, so I'll look up his ancestors in UK to see if that's a possibility.
I assume you have access to Australian records - is there any way I can do the same?
I remember reading somewhere that a lot of Australian census?? records were destroyed by the Government - is this the case?
Obviously I have a lot more work to do.
Many thanks so far
Phil

Marriage:

Thomas Joseph KYNASTON m. Madeline Florence RYAN 1917 WAGGA WAGGA #8040

This is the only Thomas KYNASTON I can see in NSW who was living in NSW.
Death & Burial in above post.

There was another Thomas KYNASTON who died as a baby - b. & d. in 1868 in DENILIQUIN.

You can search the NSW BMD yourself. There are a small number of KYNASTON's listed.

Thanks 'Merlin' for your help.
I think I'll have to do a bit more work at 'my end' to establish just who Tom, his Cousin was. I don't want folks spending time looking up Kynastons just in case he wasn't one!!

It's great to get so much feedback though.
If anyone wants any help in the Shropshire / Montgomeryshire area, let me know - not that I am any expert by any means!

Thanks William, I was luck enough to have known my Grandmother Mabel Elizabeth - she lived to 91, (d 1986) a wonderful lady. I just wish I had spent more time with her talking about Grandad - everybody must say the same thing, lucky to have his 'diary' and just a few photos tho.
Regards
Phil

I now have a little bit more information.

It is possible that 'Cousin Tom' was Thomas Pierce, son of William and Alice Pierce, who emigrated from the Oswestry area of Shropshire in the early 1900's

I am hoping to meet a decendant of the Pierce family next week who may have more information

Many thanks
Phil
