Eliza Oakley help
« on: Wednesday 03 October 12 19:41 BST (UK) »
Trying to find Eliza/Elizabeth Oakley on 1911 census but was unable to find her. Found her husband Thomas Oakley on 1911 census living with the Turner family at the Old Vicarage , Much Marcle (his birth is 1871 but is down as 1874 on census). Says Thomas is married on the census for 15 yrs with no children but his wife Eliza/Elizabeth is nowhere to be found.  She was born Eliza Manns abt 1875 daughter of Samuel & Mary Ann. Thomas & Eliza married 1893 in Kempley.
I found a Samuel & Mary Ann Manns on 1911 census living in Gloucester, living with them is a daughter Eliza Smith, does anyone think this could be the family ? Im a bit confused, has anyone any thoughts on the matter please.
Thank you

Unfortunatley we are not able to do lookups on the 1911 (RootChat policy)

However, do their places of birth, ages and occupation on the 1911 match those of a previous census? If they are, then that could be a good indictaion that it is the same family.

My husband's family are Manns and i have this family on his Family Tree.
I have also found it confusing.
In 1911 Eliza is living with her parents so i assume she and Thomas have separated or divorced.
I cannot find a re-marriage for her so dont know why she is calling herself Smith???  I can only think she has taken up with somebody called Smith but for some reason isnt married to him!!!

Hi,
Its a long time since I was looking at the Oakley & Manns family, but funnily have started looking again.  I cant find them on the 1911 census now, are they living in Kempley  ?

Just because they're not together on census night doesn;t mean they've split up - Elizabeth could just have been at her parents overnight helping out for some reason (agree 1911 does seem to fit)

Another possibility is that Thomas Oakley also goes by the name of Smith

Dont think Thomas went under any other name, he is on 1911 census as Thomas Oakley, and have found his burial and inquest into his death in 1922 still Thomas Oakley, havent looked at 1939 register for Eliza as havent got a subscription to Find my past so dont know what name she continued going under.  I also couldnt find a marriage or a death for her.

???

I don't subscribe to the 1939 Census - but by searching we have

Elizabeth OAKLEY - birth year 1875 - at Hereford R.D. - Hereford

with a few other people

inc

William JANCEY - born 1898

Have you compared Eliza Smith's "Completed Years marriage" in 1911 with Eliza Mann's 1893 marriage year?

No I hadnt, but just looked and Eliza Smith says she has been married 10 years on 1911 census.
Eliza Oakley would have been married 18 years.
