Foley's James and Luke, Rosscommon
« on: Thursday 04 October 12 00:36 BST (UK) »
James and Luke Foley are related, not sure if they are brothers, cousins, etc.  Were farmers and military records of Luke's from Civil war say he was from Rosscommon.

They were born in Ireland,  any help out there would be so thankful for.  First time I found James was in 1849 in New Hampshire.   Son, Thomas E. was born.  He is my ggfather.

Hi Judy,

welcome to Rootschat  :)

Your research is before civil registration records began so you would be looking at parish records which need more specific information.

Here are some pointers:

Welcome Foley2find

There are only a few sets of Irish Records to work with for the 1800s and previous years unfortunately
The main ones relied on are church records which means you need to know a parish or do quite a lot of searching
In the mid 1800s a valuation of land was taken which recorded the owners and the tenants and can prove a good source of information
This is a link to a search for FOLEYS in Roscommon
There are 56 results which may include some people twice if they held more that one piece of land
There is only one Thomas but you would need to confirm some link to him to prove he could be James' father

A reference to a parish or townland is really required or the luck of the Irish! Best of luck
