Double name
« on: Thursday 04 October 12 16:55 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Hartley Hartley was born about 1843 in Trawden, Lancashire.

Can someone explain why he was given such an usual name please?

He was the second youngest of ten children.

Thanks.

Hi Gibby
I have a Barker Greenwood Barker who was part of a family that were always known as Greenwood - father born before the wedding of Mr Greenwood to Mrs Barker. Now I have always assumed that the given name Barker was there to clarify the situation.

I have Nutcombe Nutcombe in my family tree.

Nutcombe was a family name and his surname was originally Quick, he took on the surname Nutcombe as a condition of a will in which he was the main beneficiary.

Odd thing is there are two Hartley Hartley registrations in 1843:

Mar Q 1843: Hartley    Hartley         Burnley    21   229
Sep Q 1843: HARTLEY Hartley         Burnley    21   205

If there is another one then perhaps it is a family tradition?

Cheers
Paul

In fact a general search for the name in Lancashire throws up 12 Hartley Hartley registrations from 1838 to 1903, all in Burnley except one in Haslingden.

Widening the search to the whole country there are 15 with the last being born in York in 1924 (mother's name Milner)

I think it must be family tradition, it would be interesting to research them all and see if there is a common link.

Cheers
Paul

My Hartley Hartley died aged 17 in 1859 so he never married or had children.

I don't have any other double name ancestors in my tree.

I'm still researching my Hartley line so I may come up with more double names.

Various lines in my mother's tree use surnames as forenames over several generations and branches. It is often useful in determining whether or not a person with the appropriate surname belongs in my tree. Strangely as this is in Cambridgeshire one of the surnames in the tree, but not so far used as a forename is in fact Hartley.

I have recently received Hartley Hartley's death certificate.

He died on 7 April 1859 at Chapel Lane, Oakworth, Keighley and he was a worsted factory labourer.

He died of consumption aged 16 and is buried at Dockroyd cemetery, Oakworth.
