Lancashire Newspapers online
« on: Saturday 06 October 12 08:40 BST (UK) »
Hi
My great grandmother Jane Hartley, native place Blackburn, 22 year old Catholic House Maid, was convicted in Preston Quarter Session 1843 and transported to Tasmania.  Had a previous conviction in about 1837 (aged 16).    Mother Ellen, sisters Isabella, Mary and Margaret.  Brothers William and John.    I cannot locate her family on 1841 census and have no other information,  I  am hoping there might be something in the newspapers of the day.  Can anyone help please.

This may be of interest to you.

New South Wales and Tasmania Convict Musters has reference to Jane Hartley from Lancashire transported on 'Woodbridge' 1843 for 10 years.

In the margin on right hand side says married to Chas Nolan.

Australian Marriage Index has a marriage between Charles James Nolan and Jane Hartley in Victoria 1854

Australian Death Index has a death for a Jane Nolan aged 59. Death registered in Collingwood Victoria 1885. Father Hartley, mother Mary

All I can find in the newspapers is the report about Jane's first crime in 1837

Preston Chronicle Saturday October 21st 1837

Preston October Sessions

Jane Hartley 16, in August last, stole one gown the property of John Hadfield.

Imprisoned in the House of Correction for 2 months

Hi John and others

Jane Hartley,Woodbridge permission to marry Charles Beeson January 1846 Tasmania.    Marriage not located but Jane was Catholic and  marriage may not have been registered.    First child Mary born  June 1846 followed by Emily, Ellen Jessie, Kate, Charles, Mary Jane and finally  Thomas in 1860. Mother clearly stated as Jane Hartley.    Jane died 1898 in Lilydale Tasmania.

I have to discount the Nolan connection but I am happy to discuss it.

Thanks so much for the Preston Chronicle reference.
Would the Bill of costs give me any more info and, if so, how do I get a copy please.
Kind regards

Hi again John

I had a look at the Muster and I think that it might actually say married Charles Buson but I could be wrong.

Hi,
how do you know what her familys names were?
feeline190

They are listed under relations - the records can be found online at the Tasmanian Archives.  I have a feeling that they were living either North Preston or Near Preston  :-\.  Abbreviated as NP.  It reads:
M Ellen at N P 2 B Wm and John , 3 S Isabella, Mary and Margt.

Charged with stealing clothes property of Catherine Robinzon? (probably Robinson) at Preston once before for same 2 Sent? 2 months and one month for being disorderly.

So she may be found in Preston on the 1841.
