This may be a complete red herring - but - given the Preston/Catholic connection - the 1820 Catholic Census of Preston [taken by the Parish Priest of St Wilfrid's Church] has the following:

Hi,

I have found the report for her trial in 1843.  She had been lodging with a Catherine Robinson in Walton le Dale for about 5 weeks.  She stole a silk shawl, silk handkerchief and an apron.  She was later aprehended in Blackburn with a pawn ticket in her possession.  This was taken to the pawn shop and the apron recovered.

I have been researching Jane Hartley too, she is my 4th Grandmother. Someone on another forum suggested looking at the baptismal registers of Roman Catholic Churches in Blackburn. There are quite a few RC churches but  St. Alban’s is the only one founded early enough. The baptismal registers (copies) for the date we need are at Lancashire Record Office - 1783-1840 held by Lancashire Record Office MF 1/66a - Microfillm. I was wondering whether Microfilm copies are digital or whether someone would have to physically go there. Thanks

Transcriptions of St. Alban baptism registers 1783-1893 are on Lancashire Online Parish Clerks website. Also burial registers for a few years. There are some Hartley entries.

Funnily enough, St Albans RC Church registers are also included on the Ancestry website under 'England and Wales Non-Conformist and Non Parochial records'.

They are the actual filmed registers, from 1783 but only up to 1840 (as in Lancashire Archives).
