John Oxspring - Wigan
« on: Sunday 07 October 12 20:31 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find the birth/baptism of my 4th Great Grandfather John Oxspring. Since his marriage in 1813 he and his family  lived in Lenton in Nottinghamshire but the 1851 & 61 census says he was born in Wigan in 1793/94. Can anyone help trace his birth or does anyone know anything of the Oxspings in Lancashire

This may be a relative - sister perhaps?

Thanks Mo

At least I now know that the Oxsprings were around in Wigan in the right time period.

I've since found that Benjamin and Elizabeth had 3 children between 1788 and 1795 Hannah, James and Ann but there is no parish record of the baptism of John

It does make you wonder why someone would leave Wigan for Nottingham

Hello Nigel,

There is a James Oxspring born about 1789 living in Basford, Notts in 1851. He is recorded as born 'Larey Green', Lancs. I can't find that place.
There are various 'Green' places though.
regards
heywood

I wonder why did they leave Nottingham for Wigan in the first place :)

Benjamin Oxspring married Elizabeth Kirkland at St. Peters Nottingham on 23rd January, 1785

Perhaps they were homesick and went back.  Son James also appears to be in Nottinghamshire on the 1851 census.

Beat me to that one Heywood  :)

Mo/Heywood

Thanks for your efforts

Looks like the Benjamin/Elizabeth Oxpsring came from Nottingham, had children in Wigan, some of whom moved back to Nottingham. I hope they are the parents of John Oxspring, my relative, but as yet this is unproven. Looks like I'll have to make a visit to Wigan Archives
