Hi

Complete transcript of units in WW1 Campaign Medals Index transcribed from the National Archives medal index
http://www.hut-six.co.uk/GreatWar/units.html

There is mention of these two.

2nd Bud Fusiliers Royal Engineers
2nd Bud Ir Royal Engineers

No idea what the Bud means though.

Thank you both - I thought it was just me seeing "Bud" and not knowing what it meant!  Will keep searching.

I have asked the Royal Engineers Museum and they haven't seen this abbreviation before.  Although they do not undertake research, I am hoping someone there will be able to work it out!

The transcript or the medal index may be at fault.  The mixture of Fusiliers and R.E. cannot be correct, and I suspect the other also.
That leaves the mysterious bud...

I see that he had passed as a miner earlier, but do not see any connection.

The RE Museum have searched but they can't find anything relating to this abbreviated name, either ::)!  So still open to any flashes of inspiration ...

I hope you don't mind - I've posted the image on a WW1 Forum to see whether anyone there has any idea.
